ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Virgin Islands has welcomed about 80 German-speaking sailors for the 35th Karibik Trophy, a 10-day sailing event running from November 6 to 16, 2026. Organised by German yacht-charter company KH+P Yachtcharter, the flotilla includes 12 yachts with participants from Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

This is the 20th time the VI has hosted the event since it first visited the Territory in 1991. Owner and Managing Director Hartmut Holtmann is leading the flotilla, which includes returning sailors and newcomers.

A relaxed island-hopping experience

Once a competitive regatta, the Karibik Trophy has evolved into a more relaxed flotilla-style event focused on camaraderie, island exploration and enjoying the VI’s anchorages and coastal attractions. Crews follow a suggested itinerary but can sail at their own pace and choose their stops, receiving daily recommendations for activities, restaurants, bars and overnight locations.

The traditional route includes Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost van Dyke and Norman Island, with Peter Island and Marina Cay also expected on this year’s itinerary. The 2026 event began at Hodge's Creek Marina on Tortola.

Tourism and economic boost

Director of Tourism Mr Clive L. McCoy welcomed the event’s return, calling the 20 VI editions evidence of the Territory’s long-standing relationship with the German-speaking sailing market. He highlighted the spending generated at marinas, restaurants, bars, supermarkets and other tourism businesses during the flotilla.

The benefits may extend beyond the event, as some participants extend their holidays before or after the sailing programme, with land-based stays on Tortola and Virgin Gorda remaining popular.
