ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The three top positions in the just concluded first annual Virgin Gorda International Marlin Tournament were won by crews from the Virgin Islands (VI).

The competition, which ran from Sunday August 20 to Tuesday August 23, 2016, was done in conjunction with the BVI Sport Fishing Association and the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour.

Some eight boats had set out on the 4-day competition, however, two pulled out due to mechanical problems on the second day.

Results

In the first position was local vessel Indigo, skippered by Roger Sinclair who is originally from Guyana. Indigo accumulated a whopping 2100 points.

The Best Angler was also won by a crew member of that boat- Ceon Hartman- who received five percent of the registration fees.

Indigo, in addition, won the Boat of the Day on day one. That crew received a trip to Aruba and monetary prizes.

In second place was Venator, captained by Curby Hodge, with 600 points. Venator was also named Boat of the Day on day three. That crew won a three-night stay at Scrub Island and monetary prizes.

Coming in at the third spot, was another locally based vessel, Ruckus, skippered by Jerome Emmanuel. Ruckus finished with 600 points just like Venator, however, Venator was declared the winner having caught the first fish.

That vessel took the award for Boat of the Day on day two and monetary prizes.

Successful first tournament

Public Relations Officer of the BVI Sport Fishing Association Krystino Vialva said despite the loss of two participating boats, the event was definitely successful.

“It was very good. We had a few mechanical issues from two of the boats and had to pull out. But all in all it was a great experience, we had a lot of press coverage, so in the future, we are looking to use the footage to market the event. So it was definitely a successful event,” he remarked.

The inaugural tournament attracted participation from St Maarten, St Croix and the VI.

There were no prizes for the biggest Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Tuna or King Fish, since no catch met the requirements of a minimum of 20 pounds.

Vialva remarked that the aim of the tournament is to add to the tourism experience in the Virgin Islands.

The closing ceremony took place on Tuesday August 23, 2016 at The Baths and Turtle Harbour.

Wow! Just recently a senseless car show, now a Virgin Gorda fishing tournament. No power plant, no hospital outdated foods, and to top it off, VG residents are paying for outdated cable. It's time to quit this "high society" c@@n mentality here and fight for what's necessary to improve living andquality of life in VG instead.

Hurry dogs eat raw pudding. Can anybody please those complainers. If you understand what goes on behind the accomplishment of initiatives, you would be slower to be so critical. Rome was not built in one day; the BVI may be days, months or years away; just wait, no, man. Stop cussing for every little thing. Pray, pray, pray each time you feel to cuss. Help us, Jah; Help us Allah; Help us Ra. Amenra.

No Government input, how embarrassing no minister of sports, no minister
of culture, no tourist board official.

The District Rept was there, but sleeping as usual. What a thing to tell a king.
Congratulations to the winners and the guys who pull it off.
