VI & USVI in path of possible tropical depression
FREDERIKSTED, St Croix, USVI- The US Virgin Islands (USVI), the Virgin Islands (VI) and other Caribbean islands are in the possible path of a system that the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is giving a 40 percent chance of formation in the coming days.
The NHC said a broad area of shower and thunderstorm activity is associated with a tropical wave located several hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.
It said little to no development of the wave is expected for the next few days while it moves westward across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic Ocean at about 15 mph.
"Environmental conditions are forecast to become more conducive for development over the weekend and a tropical depression could form by early next week several hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles," the NHC said.
The system’s project path puts the Lesser Antilles, which includes the USVI and VI, in its way. However, while residents should pay attention to the wave’s trajectory and development, there are currently no forecasts beyond its possible development into a tropical depression by the weekend.
