DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI - Virgin Islands Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) says the United Nations (UN) and Virgin Islands relationship is stronger than ever with the UN being the Territory’s main development partner to pursue sustainable development in the hopes of achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

The Premier made the statements in the Saturday, February 11, 2023, sititng of the House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands (VI) whicle adding that the Virgin Islands' relationship with the UN is a legal one where the VI is one of the Territories on the UN’s list of Non-Self-Governing Territories.

This according to Hon Wheatley, means the UN has legal obligations under the UN Charter and other UN conventions and resolutions to the VI and these obligations are in relation to supporting local development and achieving a full measure of self-government in the process of decolonization.

“Importantly, every year, the UN General Assembly adopts a resolution during its session to reaffirm these legal obligations and other commitments,” he said.

"Madam Speaker I am pleased to inform this Honourable House that the 77th UN General Assembly adopted its resolution on the Virgin Islands on 12th December 2022. The resolution, among other things, reflects the international community’s views on the political turbulence we experienced last year and calls for continued assistance to the Territory from the UN system to support sustainable development and hurricane recovery."

UN-VI Country Implementation Plan extended throughout 2023

In terms of the UN’s follow-up on its commitments, the Premier said he is pleased that the UN development system and the Government of the Virgin Islands have agreed to extend the UN-VI Country Implementation Plan throughout 2023 with revised priorities.

He added that the Country Implementation Plan is the official agreement that guides the UN’s cooperation with the Virgin Islands in areas such as the creation of a business environment and investment climate that is more conducive to the success of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises and to attract private investment

Dr the Hon Wheatley added that the plan also seeks to Accelerate the transition to a more diversified, tourism-led, investment-driven, low-carbon economy that supports inclusive and resilient economic growth.

He noted that the plan will also help the VI to strengthen national laws, policies, systems, and institutions to improve governance, security, and social cohesion among other goals.

It would be embarrassing to be a signatory to the self-determination concept and then turn around and fight every effort towards that end. For those of us who believe that the UK has all the power, we must accept that they can reenslave us if they wish.

Focus on fixing all the internal issues that we have, Stop getting distracted by self governance, we are far, far away from that...We were doing very, very well as a colony up to 15 yrs ago. When Ralph, Omar, Julian and Dancia very educated folks made a mess of the BVI and its economy, we saw the birth of mask corruption and internal bachanal, Ralph had no control, Ralph was a weak leader. It was Kaos. We tried Orlando and NDP hoping for better it got Worse. We again try Fahie and VIP, hoping they have learnt and will come good this time, how wrong were we.. So, Our Representatives are the ones have us to this point, not the Governor or Britain... The first real solution to a problem, is to speak the truth about it...

We must use the power of the UN's mandate for self-determination to test the UK's commitment to honor that mandate.

has ZERO power in the BVI. UK has all the power with the Unity puppets and the appointed UK governor and CoP. Accept reality.

The order in council is the only way to guarantee that ALL of the COI recommendations will be implemented as committed to by the Unity government.

Mr. Sowande, the UN cannot help you to get out of those commitments. And I suspect that most of the people want to see the COI recommendations implemented. Please stay away from this independence nonsense, we are not ready.
