DILI, Timor-Leste: “We remain open to a positive relationship with the UK, but as it stands now, the relationship remains on an unsustainable course.”

This is according to Virgin Islands (VI) Special Envoy Mr E. Benito Wheatley during his presentation at the recently concluded UN Pacific Regional Seminar on Decolonisation hosted by the Government of Timor-Leste in the country’s capital Dili from May 21-23, 2025.

‘Unjustified attacks’ on VI’s reputation

According to Mr Wheatley, the VI had genuinely hoped that the tone of the relationship with the United Kingdom (UK) would change with a new ruling party in Government; however, this is proving challenging.

“We continue to see unjustified UK attacks on the reputation of the BVI directly by UK parliamentarians who are doing everything in their power to smear the jurisdiction’s reputation as an international finance centre (IFC) and damage our integrity internationally.”

UK accused of trying to weaken VI’s financial self-sufficiency

Mr Wheatley also said the UK Government is also pressing the VI to make regulatory changes to its financial services sector that go far beyond the international standards “we currently follow along with the majority of the world’s jurisdictions.”

The Special Envoy explained that these regulatory changes would have an adverse impact on the revenue generated by the financial services industry that funds two-thirds of the government budget, which pays for teachers, doctors, nurses, policeman and other public servants who serve the public.

“Why seek to weaken the BVI’s financial self-sufficiency and our ability to provide for ourselves? Why pressure us to do things that would make us financially dependent? We are very well aware that we are not well liked or trusted by certain elements of the UK Government and UK Parliament. These elements are not interested in the UK having an equitable relationship with the BVI, because they believe colonialism gives the UK the levers needed to control the Territory through undemocratic means.”

Noting that his utterances were the naked truth, Mr Wheatley said time will tell which elements will win out in London’s internal struggle with its colonial impulses.

“We remain open to a positive relationship with the UK, but as it stands now, the relationship remains on an unsustainable course. Regardless, the BVI will continue its march toward self-determination,” Mr Wheatley stated.

The UK has also been criticised by regional and international bodies for its Order in Council that threatens to suspend the constitution of the Virgin Islands and impose direct rule from London.

Only wise people know that we must sever ties with the UK. Long and short, open and shut, "The UK wants to practice Neo-colonialism on black people, on the Virgin Islands, the land our ancestors bought." But those without a knowledge of their past, without a knowledge of their culture and history, will become country house slaves again. But the wind of African Revolution is brewing and it will hit the Virgin Islands. We have to stop being afraid. The blasted UK does not feed us or give us anything to float our country. Take your foot off our necks, please. We want to breathe without you. Yes, we can! I don't want to hear none saying "we can't" for indeed we been doing ever since they left us. FREE PALESTINE AND FREE THE VIRGIN ISLANDS FROM COLONIAL RULE!! Pshaw, man!

Benito is a paid public servant. Which ones of the elected enable and empower this drivel as the supposed word and opinion of the people? How much of our money is being spent on this? Something to ponder at election time.

We have real problems here, and yet we choose to utilise our resources and finances in pursuit of this crap... and parties....

Regardless of what the people of the VI want "the BVI will continue its march toward self-determination,” Mr Wheatley stated. That is not what the UN Charter supports. The UN supports the will of the people Not the orchestrated manipulations of the Wheatley Boys.

Hmm. This is true. BUT, last time i check, the VIP was the old ruling party that the people wanted to change from. VIP won 6 seats and the non-VIP won 7 seats. The people did NOT get the change they voted for. Anyone who supports the current primer and party need their head checking. I don't care if he is your brother or your cousin. He is a POOR leader and the UK HAS to step in. At least 2 future generations frig up by now because of one man's poor leadership. I would have to agree with the comments that say that the young man in this article DOES NOT speak for the people. His views are his own. It is a misrepresentation of the views of the majority population. Our tax money should not be used to pay someone to misrepresent the people.

We can get another leader, but we do not want no white man ruling us. You asking for Revolution in this place. It will come. Why so many dotish people want to go back in time to be ruled by the Colonizer, the Commissioner, the Coroner, the Magistrate, the Judge and the Doctor, all in one? Start to study your school subject called "Virgin Islands History." Not HIS STORY OF THE British, but the story of the resilient people of the Virgin Islands. Wake up from "lah-lah land," people of the Virgin Islands.

Always amazed at these comments. Luckily the persons making these comments are NOT the majority of the people, but individuals with a hate for the well being of this country. I never will support bad government and we have work to do in that’ area, but you are talking about the fundamental rights of a people and their right to govern themselves. That’s fundamental. I will stick with the silent majority who will stand on truth and what is right. Shalom

You need fundamental schooling to understand that 'the people' governing themselves is why we living in a third world state when we are literally a paradise. you are a coward to stand with the rest of the silent majority. We all suffering. but yeah....Shalom bossy

You understand the times and season. We want the right to govern ourselves. We will not bow to the rulership of white colonial masters. No Neocolonialist, No UK Rule. We want the right to rule ourselves. Let the UK go and figure out where their people will live among the Muslims, Indians and Arabs in the United Kingdom. VI for the people of the Virgin Islands, not prejudice people who go online saying: "BVI is not a good place, things are harder in the BVI," and that time the best job they ever had was found in the VI; the first time some saw a washer, the first time some live in houses and apartments that did not croak when walking upstairs, because theirs was 300-years old. Stop bigging up the UK to take rulership over us. They are not better than our people to lead us. We shall not have it, not over the dead body of our ancestors!!

Freedom of expression. Let him speak to educate some of your heads. People of the Virgin Islands want to utilize the right to govern ourselves. Do you understand how racist SOME OF those UK people are? Like the old people would say, "them begrudgeous", they will tax you out of the land your ancestors left for you, just so they could buy it, them and their croney bankers. They done want to tell us which beach to go on and where to live with their racist real estate practices. The banks don't want to lend our people money to buy land, because they would feel they are empowering us more, but the banks are quick to lend money for cars that will depreciate today, yesterday. Let us fight for our freedom from colonial rule. We are not going backwards -- forward ever, backwards never said Hon. Reeiel George. Let's go NDP!. VIP sleeping, but can give away taxpayers money easy, easy. And Alliance, we are watching you with bad eye.. you mash up everything you touch and we just don't want people who can't find their nable string and DNA in the blood line of ancestral Virgin Islanders running our country. "We don't want 'whitey" eighter. Rest yourself down!" We not on the floor of the HOA. We not apologizing!
