VI-UK relationship is like a child molested by an adult family member- Claude O. Skelton-Cline

BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Noting that everyone has an inherent right to be free and that anything that interferes with that is morally and ethically wrong, commentator Claude O. Skelton-Cline has compared the relationship between the Virgin Islands and the United Kingdom (UK) to that of an innocent child molested by a family member.

Speaking on his show, Honestly Speaking, on September 9, 2025, Mr Skelton-Cline was at the time making that point that the Virgin Islands was in no position to negotiate a new constitution with the UK when it has a “gun to its head”.

The clergyman was making reference to the Order in Council to suspend the VI’s constitution, which was put in place to force the VI to implement recommendations from a controversial Commission of Inquiry.

The Order in Council remains in place despite the VI fulfilling its obligations.

‘Violated’

“It’s ethically wrong, it's morally wrong. It's like a woman who is caught in an abusive domestic relationship, who's violated because she's made to believe, indoctrinated, that I exist to beat you and you are my pawn, my property.

“It’s like the little boy or girl in their state of untested innocence who’s molested by a family member, a parent, a grandparent, an uncle.  You pervert their sexuality and their identity, and then you swear them to secrecy, don’t tell anybody what happened, don’t tell anybody what we do, and that child grows up to be an adult, but they grow older but not maturing because they’re stuck right where they were being perverted.”

Becoming the monster

The man of the cloth added that the danger of that abusive relationship is that if the VI is not careful, it would become the very monster it is fighting.

“And you begin to treat other people like that. This is why, in this country, we have a cycle of control and manipulation. It's a residue of colonialism,” Skelton-Cline stated.

He said many Virgin Islanders have left these islands because they were mistreated by their own family members.

Skelton-Cline also said this mentality of mistreatment has been directed at the expatriate labour force.

“This is why we have to be careful about how we, as a country that demands a labour force from other countries like the Philippines, something that we are in need of, and then we treat the people with disrespect and disregard.

“We treat them using intimidation and fear with their visa, with their work permits. Don’t look at me funny, I am showing you how you can become the very thing that you despise in other oppressive groups and nations,” Skelton-Cline told his listeners and viewers.

Comparing molestation to politics shows how insensitive he can be. Yall barely take it seriously when it comes to real cases but have the gall to compare it to your politics. We really need to start denouncing some people.

Blah Blah Blah. Everything is always someone elses fault.

You sir are a parasite. Shut up. And how dare you compare it to domestic abuse.

Let's take us Brits away and see what would happen. I KNOW, the biggest organised crime gang in the territory would be left to run riot here. I'll be generous and give you 3 guesses to who that might be? Then again, you'd have to activate all 2 of the brain cells in your head to figure that one out. POLITICIANS.

Please, please, please let me debate you publicly and live stream it. It would be the easiest days work.

Is he really comparing child abuse to the corrupt behaviours of some. For shame on you Claude. Victims of sexual abuse cannot be compared to anything.

Some of us prefer colonization rather than self-determination or association. The majority of whom won't be around to see either.

I understand the need for shock value statements, but to trivialize the experiences of victims in our communities by making this analogy is beyond the pale. You should be ashamed of yourself.

No surprise at these comments at all! I wonder if those of you making these comments really understand the true and real nature of the relationship with the uk and its colonies, including the BVI? The uk is called the “mother country” and the position of “mother” comes with serious responsibilities and obligations to her “children” as detailed by the UN. How many of you have read article 73 of the UN charter. I may be wrong but a lot of emotions here, absent of solid understanding and knowledge about this “relationship”. His style might be questionable but don’t don’t be blinded by your emotions and miss the big picture folks. Get properly educated on this topic and stop allowing your emotions to control you. You are like children when you do that! Some of you WILL not like this but truth is truth, deal with it! Shalom!

Undoubtedly, the hard truth is that colonialism is a dehumanizing, abusive, exploitive, and controlling beast. An integral, deliberate action of the colonialists playbook was sexual violence and rape. And that despicable behavior is undeniable, for by day the hypocrites treat blacks/slaves like a piece of stick ( non -human) but at night they ( muda skunks) find themselves down in the quarters trying to burst a nut. The language is harsh and coarse but colonialism cannot be cast in a soft light. Be aware of wolves in sheep clothing,, bellowing in flattering, flowery language. Be vigilant, vigilate and look out for the mirages.
