PASEA ESTATE, Tortola, VI- Consumers in the Virgin Islands (VI) can now enjoy a decrease in the price of cage-free eggs under the ‘Oh So Good’ brand at RiteWay.

A press conference to launch the new line of eggs from the Dominican Republic was held at the supermarket on Monday, September 8, 2025.

This new partnership with the Dominican Republic supplier was made possible following the trade mission there earlier this year, where representatives from Road Town Wholesale were part of the VI contingent led by Premier and Minister for Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7).

Egg prices halved

General Manager of Road Town Wholesale Trading Limited, Neil Hayes, said, “We’re celebrating the fact that we’ve halved the price of eggs through some great supply work, finding some eggs from a new egg supplier in the Dominican Republic.”

He thanked Premier Wheatley, who was also present for the launch, for encouraging them to seek a new supplier in the Dominican Republic.

The government has been committed to expanding the Territory’s basket of goods and seeking new supply markets, especially in the wake of the Trump administration tariffs.

“I’m very excited that we’re lowering the price of eggs for the consumers after what has been a very difficult 18 months with egg pricing being so high,” Mr Hayes added.

The eggs are priced at $5 for a dozen and $11.99 for the 30-pack. Mr Hayes also revealed that the brand 'Oh So Good' is specifically made for RiteWay in partnership with Cost-U-Less, its sister company.

"Part of the way we're trying to save consumers' money is by doing private label, which means we go to growers or producers and we get them to make product to our specification, which helps us lower the price rather than necessarily rely on big American brands."

It’s a ‘win-win’ situation- Premier Wheatley

Premier Wheatley reiterated the urgency in finding new supply markets to lower the price of goods for VI consumers.

“I think eggs [are] so symbolic of what’s happening because the price of eggs became unaffordable for the average resident, there was an outcry.”

Road Town Wholesale, he said, was able to see that the Dominican Republic had products at a lower, more affordable price during the trade mission.

“They’re fresher, hormone-free free and of course, it increases intra-Caribbean trade, which is great for the BVI, it’s great for the Dominican Republic; it is a win-win.”

The Premier called the new egg supplier partnership just the beginning and expressed optimism that other companies in the VI will look into getting goods from the Dominican Republic, other Caribbean islands or Latin American countries to “make things easier on the consumer here”.

Own self. Working with a lot of locals ain’t always easy and can be very difficult or frustrating. It’s cheaper to have tshirts print in China pay shipping/ customs then paying any of the local tshirt customs outlets. Local - doesn’t always guarantee success or it will work, especially when a local individual have a greedy selfish mindset..

Let the locals get up off the sitdung and push their business; depending on the government or someone else to move forward is their problem. Yes, we should have enough local eggs and chicken here to supply the entire Territory but all of them are waiting on the government. Marketing your stuff!!!

Sorry, the Premier and Minister has failed to invest in the local production. Don’t mind him when he say they invested whatever in the poultry farm up Pari; that was a little one off so that he can claim praises! What a complete waste he is to Agriculture.

Not so good for VI egg producers. I guess no one in his family or friends in that business.

Premier this is no good news. We should support and encourage our local farmers to produce our own local eggs and other farming and fishing. When this is done then we can say BVI is making progress.
    We take pleasure in importation.
All the money made in thr BVI goes out of the county leaving the country with bad roads bad hospital. Thr list goes on.

The North West company which is Canadian owns Rite Way and from day one promised lower prices, but the prices only went up. This nonsense about the USA tariffs is a weak excuse as tariffs only apply to goods exported to the US. Eggs surely can be produced locally. The problem is greed on the part of these grocery store owners. BVI government need to regulate prices. Gas prices in the US are at a low price, almost down to $2 gallon but are still extortionate here.

i agree plus you can't trust the quality of local stuff when it comes foods that can affect you heatlh severely. Had a time i bought local chicken and place it in a bowl of vinegar to clean...within 5mins i saw maggots coming out of the chicken.... i'm not sure if we have strict food regulations and checks balances for people who distributing food here like them bigger nations but i not taking any chances again

i never see that happen to any of the raw chicken from USA so.
