ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Even as the pass rates in Mathematics at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations are a cause for concern in the region, the Virgin Islands (VI) has seen an increase in its pass rate.

This was disclosed by Chief Education Officer Mrs Orlandette R. Crabbe at Professional Day for teachers at Multi-Purpose Sports Complex on Monday, August 25, 2025.

Mrs Crabbe told the teachers that VI students' pass rates in Mathematics have risen by 6%, reaching 52%, and surpassing the regional average by nearly 15%.

The education CEO also revealed that the VI has experienced a significant increase in student registration at both the CSEC and Caribbean Advance Proficiency Examination (CAPE) levels.

She said a 100% pass rate highlights this success in eight subjects and a 90% to 99% pass rate in seven others, including Information Technology, English A, and Integrated Science.

Hard work bearing fruit

Mrs Crabbe stated, "These gains are evidence that the hard work of our educators is bearing fruit. The progress we celebrate today shows what is possible when we all commit to our students. However, it also reminds us of the work that still lies ahead, as the future our children deserve depends on us."

The Chief Education Officer called on educators to recommit this year and ensure that the entire profession reflects the standards worthy of the future of the territory’s children.

“What aligns with the future we are building includes arriving to work on time, being prepared for the day, carrying out the duties outlined in your role profiles with diligence and enthusiasm, and demonstrating respect for your colleagues, your principals, and the profession we all represent,” she added.

The foundation

Mrs Crabbe emphasised that educators are the foundation of student success and professional integrity.

“They strengthen our schools, support our colleagues, and most importantly, create an environment where students feel valued, supported, and inspired to learn. This is essential for building a thriving future for the Virgin Islands,” she concluded.

Some students complain that when doing EDPM they couldn't start in time because of internet connection and one of the invigilator said she is not giving them the extra time at the end to make up. How fair can this be. They held back the paper until student were connected but still didn't give them the allotted time to do the exam.

Oh my the regional pass rates are quite low. We live in a Global world. How about comparing more widely?

Let's say if 100 students have met the criteria to sit the exams, is the full cohort being permitted to proceed, or is a selective approach being taken, where only a fraction, say the top 20, are advanced while the rest are sidelined?
