ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Ninth District Representative and Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Vincent O. Wheatly (R9) has said that throughout the 2023 Elections period, he was surprised at how intuned both seniors and children were to issues in the territory.

Hon Wheatley was at the time appearing as a guest on JTV’s ‘The Big Story’ on Friday, May 5, 2023, with Cathy O. Richards to take about his new portfolio after moving from Government backbencher in the last Unity Government.

Speaking on some seniors he knew, Hon Whatley added, “They listen to the radio a lot, and so they are very much in tune with what is happening in the county… sometimes I’m shocked that they keep these details in their mind,” he said.

‘Even the children too, I was surprised how intuned they were in this elections cycle, and they could engage you on issues. There is hope, I felt empowered and obligated at the same time to pay more attention, particularly to these young people,” he said.

Youths facing challenges in today's world - Hon Whealtey

Meanwhile, Hon Wheatley said his experience in dealing with youths especially, has caused him to want to understand more of what challenges youths face in the territory.

He added that he is encouraged to engage more, which he said includes to, “sit and listen to these young persons, understand what their concerns are, understand what their aspirations are because they live in a time that is almost foreign to us.”

Hon Whatley noted that he understands also, that some of the challenges of today’s world faced by youths are issues that the older generation may not understand.

“They are facing other challenges besides technology and that is part I think we often miss, what are the real challenges of our young people and some strange things do come up,” he said.

Hon Wheatley highlighted that youths need attention and when the focus is always on solving bigger problems, there are smaller subtle issues like youth challenges that often need attention too.

I hear you loud and clear, obviously you are hurting, you need for the talk to stop but truth be told everyone needs to reflect on this last election because it's not business as usual. There is a shift in the way each individual that put them selves up for election they must consider and have a change of heart because what they met on the ground is beyond comprehension.

The struggle is real and they must step up the the challenges of the public's needs. No more sitting down in air conditioning buildings in jacket and tie and don't know what it feels like to feel the due, the rain and the sun, hear the thunder and see the lightning, its time for action and meet the public at our point of need.

So you have to give them that time for reflections otherwise the public will take the streets and go the poles before the 4 year period is over.

It's the public who employed them not the other way around so they better reflect and do it well.

Get up and get qualified go to the technical evening classes learn a trade. Then do what Lorna did. She is not satisfied to have anyone deciding for her. Show your qualifications then demand a job in your field from your district rep.

We are well in-tuned to you as well Sir waiting to see your actions for the next 4 years. While many may have lost hope in you and your government, some still voted and gave you a second term. Please don't let the people down! So much issues in our district and territory that needs attention and not small talk. Just avoid too much media attention unless it's accomplishments or public announcements. Thanks in advance from someone who voted.

I from VG and I must say we’re the momo of the territory. Wondering what the people who voted for him have to say now because where’s he’s at he can’t assist anyone with land. We VG people too stupid and selfish

You don't have to be in that specific ministry to get lands or whatever else. The minister is responsible for health and social services a position to help to keep us alive for us to acquire land. We have to be alive to achieve anything. for sure he will work for the people this time around, the last 4 years was hard but tried. The lands and other things will come the team will work together to make our lives better not bitter stay positive. Once we are alive anything is possible keep hope and faith alive.

I'm warning this government if you leave our young people behind in this season all hope for you in the next election is lost. Infact they will take the streets or show up to the house of assembly yard with their placards and get the necessary attention of the world for vino and all other media house will be present. I beg you'll to stop playing with our youths they have a voice please let it be heard.
Stop telling them they are the future and we turn around and shut them down and make them shut up.

Stop it they are tired of it. Do more for them that's all I'm simply saying. A big part of the budget needs to be geared toward the youths and i bet you we will see drastic change in this territory.

Our greatest resources with so much potential have been overlooked for decades. No more of that in this era please

So Vincent is surprise that seniors youths are engage in what is going on in the territory. Why is he surprise? is it because when you get in power you think that the people don't have no sense to understand what is going on and that you can pull the lid over our eyes and so anything and the people will not understand. We are not dumb and we know what you are going and what is going on. Don't feel because you up there you know it all. move on. fix the issues.
