ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Businessman Lesmore Smith, who will be a candidate in the upcoming 2023 General Elections in the Virgin Islands (VI), has called on the people of the territory to follow Christ rather than return to the days of "Sodom and Gomorrah.”

Mr Smith was at the time appearing on the March 24, 2022, edition off 'Mr BVI', a social media panel show hosted by Angelle A. Cameron and Bishop John I. Cline on the topic of crime and youths in the VI.

Christians must engage more youths - Mr Smtih

Recalling his days as a young Christian, Smith said one solution to reach out to young people is for more Christians to engage with their peers on the street.

“The young ones that are following Christ need to go and touch them and let them know there is hope in different ways. We know it’s a challenge for them, but we can reach them,” he said.

He said; however, adults must also set the example and show they can live in harmony and love in the eyes of youths.

“The bible said these days will come… we are going to have to decide whether or not we are going to follow Christ, or we are only going to talk about Christ,” he said.

A return to Sodom & Gomorrah

Smith added that sometimes he believes the VI is returning to the days of Sodom and Gomorrah.

“We don’t need to become those people that just calling on the name [of Christ] but not living through to the name,” he said relating to youths and adults following Christianity.

The political candidate said that while he empathises with the challenges the youths of today face, including peer pressure to ‘keep up’ with brands and jewellery, they still need to be taught about the risks of venturing into crime and the vulnerability it brings.

Mr Smith had unsuccessfully contested for a seat at the 2019 General Election with the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM), a party formed by members who had broken away from the National Democratic Party (NDP).

"I am thanking God...to continue to trust him, despite the challenges, despite the obstacles, despite I didn't win the last election, despite the next election I am going to win,” he said in a statement in December 2021, regarding taking another shot at getting a seat in the VI House of Assembly.

No matter how much religion you have, it will not work unless you use your common sense. If you act irresponsibly that is the result of what you get. I am so tired of people saying God will handle it, so why did God give everyone the ability to think for themselves sensibly? Some parents are NOT teaching their children to do the right thing because a lot of the parents were not taught the right way, and continue with their silly beliefs, like superstitions. We in the BVI are no different than any other place on earth who are suffering from lack of knowledge on how to be productive in this world. The world is passing these small islands by at a rapid speed. Why do you think others come from around the world setting up businesses here, that we don’t even have a clue how to run them? We still with this week of prayer for this and that, instead of getting educated and keeping up with the rest of the world. When the big takeover from the UK comes, you can’t say you weren’t warned. You leaders all act like ostriches with your heads in the ground. The takeover will be easy here, and you have yourselves to blame.

“Madussa” If anyone had common sense they would not be talking about their imaginary, invisible friend who lives in the sky.

Those who believe they have all the 'common sense' truly believe that they themselves are gods, but one day we will all have to answer for our pride and foolish attitudes.

Lesmo need to use all that money he has to waste on politics and give his good workers a good living wage...Not $8 & $9 per hr.. Something better. Like $12 & $13per hr...Them work hard and good for him... Its a better way and more Godly way to spend the money he has. Than to through his money in political fire for it to burn...

Obviously you have no idea of the realistic living wage for the size of the security business industry in the BVI. It cannot take no more than what is being received right now. Most development around here is built on CREDIT folks !!

49 This was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy. 50 They were haughty, and did abominable things before me; therefore I removed them when I saw it.

So you are saying that the BVI needs to show more hospitality. Okay. How about removing the oppressive taxes on remittances.

I am not surprise with the remarks by Lesmore Smith. It is not what goes in you that defiles you. Lesmore spoke what is in his mind. From his expression, one can see clearly what his intentions are. Being close to the cookie jar will get him richer. More security contracts to secure all the government buildings and banks.

What I think is more important at this juncture is for parents to be involved in their children education so that they will be able to contribute towards the development of the territory. I would advocate that focus should be on the development of more social programs for adults and children alike. Attention should be placed on technical education for youths who drop out of schools, conflict resolution and good morale standard. They should be thought how to manage finance and assets. Unless Lesmore can develop programs such as these, then ye should not waste his time.

My concern is the squalor that the senior citizens who have paved the way for us is living in the nursing home. Why is it that they don’t have enough food and the Government is feeding a bunch of illegals that have not contributed NOTHING TO THE COUNTRY IS SITTING BACK EATING GOOD. BVI LOVE MY A.. REMEMBER!!!! ONE DAY WE ALL IS GOING TO GET TO THAT AGE AND WILL BE TREATED THE SAME. IT IS CALLED KARMA. TREAT THE ELDERS WITH RESPECT AND THE DIGNITY THEY DESRRVE.
    • thank you (30/03/2022, 10:55) Like (8) Dislike (0) Reply
Why is our taxpayers monies paying for a bunch of illegals to lay up in hotels and eating three squares
a day and the seniors in the nursing home have to share a slice of cheap probably stale bread. Can someone please explain that to me? The illegals that is going to be a burden on the County is SLUCKING down good food and the elders is treated like nothings. This Country is one big dirty, disgusting joke. The seniors paved the way for everyone. When you guys is driving around on the roads in your cars just remember the seniors use to walk those then dirt roads and paths just to get into Road Town to a job that was only paying some of them less than 50 cents a day.

The good "christian" man either doesn't understand, or has forgotten the old testament stories about Sodom and Gomorrah or he is simply a despicable person. According to the bible stories, these two cities were very wicked and licentious especially regarding unusual sexual activities. The words "sodomy"and"sodomise" have their origin in the O.T city name "Sodom".
To suggest that the BVI community was once, or is becoming like Sodom (Note that Mr Smith said "VI RETURNING to the days of Sodom and Gomorrah") is not only grossly untruthful, but also rude, vicious and insulting to us, to say the least. In my opinion
he is a poor choice to exhort the christian faith and an even poorer choice t serve as a BVI representative.

There are two types of people in this world. Those that tell the truth, and those that don't. Unfortunately in my experience Mr. Smith is of the later.
