ST JOHN’S, Antigua- Disaster response within the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean will be strengthened, following the country’s participation in a weeklong Disaster Management Workshop in Antigua.

Two members of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF), Inspector Lawrence and Sergeant James Ramprashad, attended the Disaster Management Workshop, which concludes today, August 5, 2025, in Antigua.

The workshop was organised with the support of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and the Regional Security System (RSS).

Enhancing disaster response

The workshop, which began earlier in the week, focuses on enhancing disaster response capabilities in the region. Participants learnt about setting up critical infrastructure like Starlink internet and solar power for field operations.

A separate one-week training course for the Caricom Disaster Relief Unit (CDRU), also held in Antigua and Barbuda, is nearing its conclusion, with a simulation exercise in Barbuda.

The CDRU training aims to strengthen disaster response across the Caribbean and also provides immediate humanitarian assistance, facilitates logistics, supports emergency telecommunications, and coordinates national and regional relief efforts.
