DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- The Virgin Islands has reached its 10,000 vaccination milestone and Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) has said there are sufficient vaccines for an additional 7000 to be inoculated.

Speaking at the Eighth Sitting of the Third Session of the Fourth House of Assembly at Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff’s Bottom, Tortola today, April 29, 2021, Hon Malone said to date there have been 10, 051 first doses and 708 second doses administered and counting.

This means that some 33% of the 30,000 population of the VI has been vaccinated.

Meanwhile, Honourable Malone has hailed the milestone reached by the VI in the midst of reluctance by many in the territory to get vaccinated and the widespread misinformation about the jab.

“By midday yesterday, April 28, 2021, 112 persons had voluntary received their first jab of AstraZeneca vaccine and BVI had achieved the significant milestone of 10,000 persons having the first dose of the AstraZeneca Vaccine,” Honourable Malone said.

He added that the milestone brings the VI closer to the target of vaccinating 17,000 adult residents which would reduce the chances of a serious outbreak of the virus in the Virgin Islands.

'I will honour pledge'

“In celebration of the milestone, I will honour a pledge I made on Wednesday to provide lunch to the first 61 persons vaccinated,” Hon Malone said.

Hon Malone had said on his Facebook page that there was an offer of ‘free lunch’ with a maximum of $20 for the first 61 persons who showed up for their first dose of the vaccine “on any island or yacht within the BVI.”

“WhatsApp your name and photo, taking your first jab to 441-0332. The first 61 photos received will be entitled to free lunch at a restaurant of your choice anywhere in the BVI ($20 limit),” Hon Malone had pledged.

Meanwhile, the Health Minister confirmed there are only 2 cases of COVID-19 in the territory.

You do realise that 708 fully vaccinated people is only 2% of our population?
Of course you do. That’s it then. Great job!

They’ll never really make it to 20,000 unless they make it mandatory for access to various necessities or to obtain or retain employment. Whoever has decided to take it already has, some are waiting to see what happens to the second dose persons and others, like myself, will not be taking it at all.

India has a major crisis with the virus, the death toll is very high. Since most persons do not want the vaccine, Hon. Malone can donate the rest of the vaccines to the government of India before it expires.
