VI Premier wants urgent action against climate change by top polluting countries

LONDON, UK– Virgin Islands Premier and Minister responsible for Climate Change, Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has called for world nations that contribute heavily to greenhouse gas emissions to be as ambitious as possible in meeting targets that reverse the ill effects of climate change.

The Premier made the calls during an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on the programme Newsday last Saturday, September 23, 2023, and said those nations who are big polluters have to recognise the way in which their decisions, actions, and economy’s function affect the rest of the world.

“Its large coastal populations and exposed location leave it at the mercy of rising sea levels, stronger hurricanes, and worsening floods and drought,” the Premier said.

He added, “Increasing temperatures, meanwhile, threaten its unique biodiversity, including coral reefs, and create human health impacts.”

The Premier stressed the need for world leaders to recognise climate change as an existential threat to the planet and, as such, to keep the threat of climate change in proper perspective.

Premier Wheatley said the Caribbean is one of the regions of the world most vulnerable to climate change.

“Despite its tiny contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, the Caribbean region is already bearing the brunt of climate disruptions, putting many of its tourism-dependent countries deeply in debt and spurring increased migration across the region.”

Mia A. Mottley calls for action on climate change

Premier Wheatley’s comments come on the heels of similar comments from Prime Minister of Barbados Mia A. Mottley, who has urged governments and private sector leaders to take immediate action on addressing climate change.

She was speaking at the 14th Annual Meeting of the New Champions as part of a panel on 'Braving the Headwinds: Rewiring Growth Amid Fragility'.

“I think we are all agreed that first and foremost, the world is facing a climate crisis,” Mottley said during the World Economic Forum’s gathering in Tianjin, China in June 2023. “What is required is urgent action,” she said.

Barbados remains one of the vulnerable nations to climate change. In recent years, the island has endured major and more frequent hurricanes alongside rising sea levels, leading to coastal erosion and major flooding.

All those big countries like the UK & others get rich through destroying the environment and exploiting labor from Africa & the Caribbean for their industrial industries. Now they want to put the pressure on small countries to fix their mess.

I don't believe in this climate change that these leaders kept using as an excuse when things happen or when they can't get their country manage,. There is nothing new under the sun, when I was younger we had bad storms, we had drouts, we had heat waves the different then we had more access to water. There were stand pipes every where, good drinking water, that never made us sick. Now we have to run to the store to get a bottle water that store in a hot place camw here in a hot container the water already melted and blended in with the chemical from the plastic bottle that it is in..No wonder the cancer rate so high. Why the world don't address that, No because they can't touch tbe billionairres that killing us with what they gave us to eat and drink.

Make sure you get the correct angles of the incinerator, the dumb trips all over the world, the operation of the electricity plant and most of all, the hot air of garbage that spews out of this man's mouth on a daily basis. That is the worst contributor to global warming as we speak!

Hot weather, Storm, all of them its climate change, yet all of them have water distribution issues to their citizens and cant find a solution, that is climate change also...Water issue is a failure of leaders. The demand for water has increased annually and should be expected as countries progress and should have been planned for.. This failure is a failure to prepare and plan.

We burn our garbage; we show a flagrant disregard for our natural environment; as a previous comment stated, we have all but BLOCKED alternative energy options; we destroy our reefs; I could go on... I knew that it wouldn't have been long before the Virgin Islands would be joining the Beast(666) System:

    Revelation 13:1-18

13 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.

4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.

6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.

10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.

12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

These leaders worldwide don't know know or understand where this 'CLIMATE CHANGE' AGENDA is leading, but it will lead to total dominance of the world by the elites like Bill Gates, Klaus Schwab and the World Economic Forum and other evil entities.

Premier, you are bringing the Agenda to the Virgin Islands with blind folds on.

    Sad! Sad!

Fix the deadly fumes coming from Pockwood Pond which in the long run will kill West End and St Johns residents, stop the raw sewage pouring into the Prospect Reef area, instead of stopping it they simply put up a warning sign, how stupid is that. Millions of tons of raw sewage from charter boats going into our sea every year when they could easily have discharging facilities at the main marinas to prevent this.

@Clown, given Tortola’s small size and build out:building out, where ever the plant was sited it would have an impact on some community. Hopefully, an in-depth analysis was conducted on various sites and a decision was decided based on the site which would the least impact on residential area. Further, hopefully, also a state-of-the-art plant was procured with low emissions. I say as others Public Works needs to be staffed by an engineer. Nuff said.

Indeed, climate change is an existential threat to the globe. This is evident, for example, by rising sea levels, increasing frequency and intensity of hurricanes, etc. Small locales like the VI is experiencing a negative externality effect of climate change which is resulting from big countries flooding the zone with exorbitant adverse pollutants. Small locales have small carbon footprints and pollute the least but is impacted the most, incurring significant economic and social costs. As Premier Wheatley noted in another commentary, the VI and other small locales are the canaries in the coal mine for the adverse impacts and burdens of climate change. The large, rich, powerful locales which have contributed and continue to pollute the atmosphere/globe with adverse pollutants, causing and exacerbating climate change impacts, must take responsibility and actions to slow, mitigate, the adverse impacts of climate change, especially the impact on small locales. The large, rich, powerful polluters whose polluting actions forced a negative externality on small locales must financially assist small locales like the VI, etc, in dealing with the costly impacts of climate change. Will they and do they give a rat’s ass what the impact is in small locales?

@E. Leonard, you waxed about the large countries contributing pollution to climate change but nothing about the local things the BVI is doing about emitting pollutants which are harmful to its residents. The non-function incinerator which drove open burning which certainly may be adversely impacting the health of residents on the Western end of Tortola. We must walk and chew gum, ie, we can demand action from the big countries but we must take urgent to protect the health of our residents. Gov Brian our neighbor in the USVI declared an emergency when the landfill in St. Thomas caught fire. I have to go back to my notes but I remember you suggesting the same for the Pockwood Pond landfill, did you not? I digressed. The residents in the west are screaming for help . Government is elected to help citizens. Enough talk and more action. Meanwhile, the citizens in West want more than talk; we need action. Does anyone care about our health? During the campaign, Sylvia Moses raise the issue of cancer but it seems to have fired up anyone.

@E. Leonard and @@E. Leonard, I’m not averse to Dr. Hon Premier Natalio Wheatley , R-7 and MoF , jet setting across the globe to attend vital and important meetings, conferences, etc, for vital travel is a sunk cost of running government; it is a sunk cost. Nevertheless, there is an emergency down at the western end of Tortola that needs his urgent action. It is the open burning at the landfill which is posing a health risk and hazard to residents. Consequently, he needs to (1) declare a state of emergency, and (2) beat feet down to District 1, inviting Hin Smith,Hon Dawson, Hon Skelton, Hon Mather, Hon de Castro, and Hon V. Wheatley to go with him, and hold a town hall meeting, apprising the residents of the plan of actions and milestones for addressing the health hazard resulting from the open burning, actively hearing their frustrations, and concerns. This issue is posing a health risk and hazard but it is not getting the urgent action needed. I did not coin this phrase but I’m borrowing it . It is an urgent and important, a Quadrant 1 issue. The Premier needs to show more concern and strong leadership on this issue.
