ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Following public outcries which were brought to the fore by this news site calling on the Health Care sectors of the Government of the Virgin Islands (VI) to take proactive measures against the possibility of the dreaded Ebola disease slipping into the Territory, a response was made public yesterday October 15, 2014.

This issue was ventilated in a story posted on this news site on October 13, 2014 captioned, “What about Ebola readiness for VI – Residents” with a sub headline “Ministry of Health and Social Development challenged to put measures in place to check tourists for Ebola like symptoms as tourist season is on.”

The concerns of residents were well placed as the number of cases of infection in neighbouring USA continues to climb however the Government of the Virgin Islands (VI) said it is taking a proactive approach and is actively planning mitigation measures to manage the impact of Ebola, should it affect the Territory.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development and the Health and Social Service Committee of the National Disaster Management Council are said to be leading the charge on behalf of the Government.

A response on this issue which was circulated via a press release yesterday October 15, 2014, said that on Friday, October 10, members of the committee met for the third time at the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) to discuss local preparations.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Irad Potter who reportedly chaired the meeting, underscored the importance of multi-agency collaboration. “We have been working together with the Health Services Authority and border protection agencies for some time to ensure that as a Territory, we are fully equipped to handle infectious disease threats. We are also routinely monitoring health services staff to ensure consistency with medical practices and procedures for these types of diseases.”

As part of Ebola preparatory efforts, quarantine facilities have been identified at Peebles Hospital and containment arrangements have been made at all main ports of entry.

The Ebola virus continues to be a global threat. Dr. Potter gave assurances that the VI is making preparation to ensure that any potential imported cases are recognised early and brought to the attention of Public Health in the United Kingdom, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and World Health Organization (WHO) on whom the Territory will rely on heavily to support the needed response.

In respect to airports Dr. Potter said, “In the absence of direct international flights into the BVI, we will benefit from the screening being done at various transit points before arrival in the Territory. However, border control agencies updated their procedures for the handling of infectious diseases in keeping with International Health Regulations.”

According to Dr. Potter, the procedures were reviewed in detail and tested during the meeting through a desk top exercise.

The committee has also been in contact with PAHO regarding the increasing of stocks of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and making these accessible to Health Workers and Line Border Officers.

The BVI Health Services Authority has developed a refresher training programme for all front-line health staff both public and private in the use of PPE, and Universal Precautions for management of persons with infections.

These efforts are intended to ensure that staff is able to treat potential patients safely while minimizing risk to themselves.

The Health and Social Service Committee of the National Disaster Management Council will meet again at the end of the month to review arrangements at health facilities and ports of entry.

This news site made efforts to reach Dr. Potter to ask further questions on the Territory's preparedness for Ebola but these efforts proved futile up to post time.

I feel that every person once been out of the territory especially in the mainland should get a Health Certificate Clearance that states that they are clear. This Ebola is a very serious disease and will lead to death. Personally speaking I know that we are not prepared for such an epidemic in this country look at how we are treating Chikungunya. GET TESTED OR DO NOT COME I!!!!!!!SIMPLE.

As I read in the Daily News today, "St. Lucia bans visitors from Ebola-stricken African nations" is an excellent idea. It may seem a little bias but we have to do what we have to do to keep our citizens safe and protected. People coming from the main land also need to be screened some how or the other.

As a healthcare worker, I am not satisfied that the BVI is equipped to handle an ebola case, God Forbid. Someone has a bad case of the flu (and we are now entering the fly season), the symptoms are similar to ebola. what do we do? How is the isolation of suspected cases be? Will all suspected patients be thrown in the same room without being sure if one or any is an ebola carrier? What about the lab technician. Are the labs equipped to test for Ebola and what about the protection of the lab workers? This thing is beyond us, it is way, way beyond us. From my experience at Peebles, every man jack will become in full contact with an ebola patient by the time it is even diagnosed. This is serious and begs for swift and intelligent thinking and measures put in place. This is not the time for "big shots" who run the hospital to take microphones and run their mouths. If the CDC and WHO cannot get this thing under control, we are going to be in trouble. This is a serious issue and every factor must be addressed with all urgency.

On target Nurse. The same thing President Obama just said on the news. The flu season is around the corner and there will be false alarms. Now the million dollar word with ebola seem to be "CONTAINMENT". How can the Territory contain even one case of this thing. One case is way too many. Have any of you seen the transportation of the nurse from Dallas to Maryland - watching this move on TV is by no means any small plan. The very plane used to transport her is extraordinary and unbelievable, with extra "balloons" that separate the patient for the pilot and others. The ambulance used is no "jeep". So, if in the U.S they are moving patients from hospitals which are waayy more sophisticated than Peebles to other facilities. What can we say to these things? Even the air conditioning systems need to be taken into considerations. Just like the AC system that goes to and from the operating theatre cannot go to other parts of the hospital because of contamination, containing ebola is even worse. We are talking major intelligence here. Let's talk about exposure of body fluids - eg: if someone with this virus is on a plane or say a public restroom, some of their urine gets exposed, then as careful as another user is, even comes in contact with it unknowingly and unintentionally, what happens. Now with the nurse who travelled to and from Dallas to Cleveland to fit her bridal party with at the bridal store. All of these people who they came in contact with at the Bridal store and all of the passengers on those flights are now being located. If it was nothing to worry about, they would let it be. I am not at all in panic, but it is a cause for great concern and trying to get us all thinking here. Firstly, I pray for the entire world that he would be merciful unto us and deliver us from this evil, and I commend my life totally to him who can take better care of it than the CDC or our healthcare providers.

You people make me laugh. Because America has gone crazy over this Ebola, we follow suit, ignoring all the real facts about this disease. I will sit back and enjoy the freak show. No attention has been paid to the diseases that are airborne and kill far more people. The flu alone kills 52,000 a year in America. One dead from Ebola, not even from America, but from Africa, and all hell broke loose. The sheeple are at it again, I really feel for you guys. Contagious illnesses like TB and others are sever and kill people as well, where are the screenings for those? Or unless America sounds the alarm we do nothing? Let's say Ebola hits the Caribbean (which nobody wants!), do you think any health system can save everybody from everything? Ebola is NOT transferred from person to person like the cold/flu etc. People need to get the facts and stop being so easily led astray.
