‘VI politicians not put behind bars’ - Governor John S. Duncan
The induction ceremony was held at the Fort Burt Hotel yesterday November 13, 2014 in the presence of a room full of some of the most senior and prominent Lions in the Territory.
Governor Duncan said that for the time he has been here he has discovered the VI to be vibrant. "It has a vibrant and active democracy, and it has not had some of the problems that other Overseas Territories have," said Governor Duncan.
He said that it's a tendency of looking at the Overseas Territories and if one of them has problems persons tend to apply them to all the Overseas Territories.
"That is not the case of the BVI. We have avoided putting our senior politicians behind bars as has happened in a number of places not too far from here,” he said.
He said that when that came close to happening there was a vote of no confidence and the government fell. "And that is a test of true governance and the Governor does not have to intervene as has happened in a number of other Territories," according to Governor Duncan.
He said that this does not mean that things are perfect in the Virgin Islands. "That is not to say that everything is perfect or that there are no challenges,” he said.
He further said, "But I am reassured by everything I have seen in this community and its ability to rise to challenge."
He reflected that back in the 1970s the VI was a very quiet and peaceful place with not much industry and activities but is today a cornerstone of a global economy with an active political process and active businesses working together.
Having already participated in an activity of the Lions Club of Tortola Governor Duncan further committed to working with the group in their endeavour to make life better for all in the communities of the Territory.

Everything he has said tells me he has preconceived notions and doesn't want to rock the boat. If this was a true democracy, he shouldn't be so high profile and talk to the people. It is a subtle discrimination and even subtler corruption.
