ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Virgin Islands (VI) is reported to be playing a crucial role in the facilitation of international business with an estimated $1.4 trillion held by BVI business companies.

This is according to the Pragmatix report, Beyond Globalisation: The BVI's Contribution to the Global Economy. In a September 2024 article by BVI Finance CEO Ms. Elise Donavan in the IFC Review, she highlighted the VI as a “pivotal player in the global and financial services industry”.

According to Ms. Donavan, as the VI celebrates the tenth anniversary of its Asia Office opening and the fortieth anniversary of the International Business Company, now known as the, BVI Business Company, she said it is the right time to reflect on the significant contribution and evolving role made in the global economy.

The VI’s “strategic expertise, robust legal framework, and innovative business structures, have positioned it as a super-connector to global markets”.

VI’s Global reach

VI companies holding of an estimated $1.4 trillion is equivalent to 1.5 per cent of global GDP and 1.7 per cent of global portfolio investment.

Fifty-seven percent of the BVI's business originates from China and the Asia Pacific region, while another 20 per cent comes from Latin America and the Caribbean, the Pragmatix report added.

“This extensive reach underscores the BVI's role as a conduit for global capital flows, connecting diverse markets and fostering economic growth. The BVI's ability to attract and facilitate business from these regions is rooted in its commitment to maintaining a stable, transparent, and business-friendly environment. This commitment has not only enhanced the BVI's reputation as a leading offshore financial centre, but also solidified its position as a preferred jurisdiction for international business operations,” Ms. Donovan wrote in her article.

Milestones for the VI

Through the Asia Office according to Ms. Donovan, a diverse range of clients have been introduced to the Territory’s financial services, from multinational corporations to high-net-worth individuals (HNWI), and investment funds. “By providing on-the-ground support and fostering closer relationships with key stakeholders, the Asia office has helped to enhance the BVI's visibility and credibility in the region.”

Meanwhile, the BVI Business Company continues to be instrumental in facilitating a wide range of international business activities, from mergers and acquisitions to joint ventures and capital market transactions.

"As the BVI continues to innovate and adapt to changing market conditions, the BVI Business Company will remain a key driver of the jurisdiction's success,” her article says.

of the this advertised 'crucial role' would be helpful to convince the public of these alleged facts. Just name a BVI company that was involved in any type of construction in these areas such as ship building, road construction, large stadiums, etc.
