ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Virgin Islands' legislator and Opposition Member, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) says the people of the territory need a more in-depth and direct explanation of local issues surrounding topics like the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) Recommendations, the ‘police in Paradise’ video, as well as the Register of Interests Act.

Hon Malone made the statement during a July 6, 2022, edition of The Big Story with host Cathy O. Richards, while touching on issues facing the territory.

“We have a number of issues here in the BVI that we must address and as we look to convene the House of Assembly, whether it's on the 14th or any other day, that we would have coming up, I would seek to address a number of particular issues,” he said.

The legislator added, “because we have concerns being raised [about] derogatory remarks that were placed in a particular front by the Commissioner of Police. We have to know the source of this, the Commissioner of Police cannot investigate itself.“

He added that the VI needs to know if there is anything sinister about the Police in Paradise video and if it was more than just a recruitment tool, which he said can only come through investigation.

He said the VI also needs information on a parallel CoI report commissioned from the law firm that was contracted to work along with Sir C. Geoffrey Cox during the CoI testimonies, “the only thing missing is the report we need to report,” he added.

More details on CoI recommendations

The former Health Minister added that for the CoI recommendations, as it stands, the VI still needs a one-on-one and group-by-group explanation of each of these issues, which is yet to come and he called for more consultation on the Regester of Interests Act, which has implications on both Elected HoA members as well as other public officials.

“We have to be mindful of what we are doing under the guise of expediency because the question has to be answered, why the rush? Why the rush is a very important question and it must be answered,” he added.

The legislator said it is time for the VI to get more engagement on local issues by officials and those within power to bring matters to the public and provide more explanation.

“We must come better as a people, as a jurisdiction, in terms of making sure that all of the tenets of accountability and transparency and good governance and whatever it is, must be brought up to par because we must have the confidence of administrating of governance of our people, by our people,  but we must and we could only do this by having them on board every step of the road,” he said.

      PLEASE DON`T GET ME WRONG.
While I think that this Minister is saying the right things now, What happened, and why didn`t he speak up when he was in the Ministry. When his boss was running things. All these late concerns make him look selfish.
We need to work together, pull your tail between your legs and fight with others for the Country.
      These Independent battles not working.

We understand the role of critique in chief, however the young leader is now in charge, and it’s on him to provide the people with the information!

However with your years of experience, there is no point in waiting on your jr to clear things up!

Am saying, make strong proposals that the government can listen to and adopt, because your knowledge and experience is needed with solutions!

This territory was under the watchful eye of representatives from the united kingdom for several years

commissioners of police have been in position over 20 years in this British Overseas Territory and they are duly responsible for law and order in this place therefore should not be pointing fingers at our people( do the maths our last local commissioner of police was vernon malone: time the British took over the rains as head of the local police force they a have been a substantial increase in criminal activity here(as a matter of persons being gun down high day now in the once tranquil place)…the commissioner of police holds the responsibility for the LAW & ORDER here

Border security is an matter whereby the Governor have a role to play to ensure no guns and dope do
not make it on the shores of this British Overseas Territory ( sitting here wondering why no ones have enough balls to ask questions)

These folks hail from London and have a mandate to safeguard this territory and pretty much fail to do so-place full of gun. The BVI do not manufacture weapons so they have to be breach border security

    keep the faith

by reading the full text of the CoI 900+ page report. It's fully accessible on the BVI government's website. There is no need for '1 on1' explanations that risk the 'explainer' twisting the facts and recommendations stated in the CoI to the 'non readers.' Reading is fundamental plus the more true sources you read the better you understand the tenuous position of the BVI with the UK now.

You want EXPLANATIONS? This is new , because you sure didn't need any when Andrew was around. Stop trying to stay relevant by yabbing in the news. If you can remedy a situation given your years of experience then do so. STOP blowing your own horn, we are not impressed.
