CANE GARDEN BAY, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has said the Virgin Islands (VI) would not be what we know it is today without the senior citizens.

Senior Citizens Month officially began on May 2, 2025, with an Opening and Declaration Service at the Cane Garden Bay Baptist Church.

To the seniors present, Dr Wheatley said, “The Virgin Islands would not be what it is without our seniors. Thank you for the sacrifices you have made, the wisdom you have shared, and the love that you have given. You are the foundation of our community, and your legacy is woven into the fabric of the Virgin Islands.”

This year is the 36th annual celebration of Senior Citizens Month in the VI, and Premier Wheatle encouraged all to take the time to listen to the seniors, to learn from their experiences and honour their very invaluable contributions.

Foster a society where ageing is celebrated- Premier Wheatley

The Premier also urged persons in the VI to commit to fostering a society where ageing is celebrated, not feared, and where seniors are seen as vibrant and community members.

He added that this shift should include policies, programmes and attitudes reflective of a genuine respect and appreciation for the elderly.

“This transformation begins with each of us, it begins with the language we use, the actions we take and the respect we show. It starts with the mindset we keep.”

Action, Premier Wheatley continued, should be taken to ensure that ageing in the VI is met with dignity, opportunity and joy.

“Ageing is not the twilight of life, it is the dawn of new possibilities. Together, let us build a society where every senior citizen feels valued, supported and celebrated; not just during Senior Citizens Month, but every day of the year.”
