MUMBAI, India— Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), and Junior Minister for Financial Services and Economic Development Honourable Lorna G. Smith, OBE (AL), ceremonially rang the opening bell at the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), marking a historic engagement during the Virgin Islands’ inaugural financial services trade mission to India.

A historic market opening

According to a Facebook post by the Office of the Premier on Thursday, August 27, 2026, the bell-ringing ceremony officially opened the trading day at the high-tech Mumbai headquarters of the NSE.

Accompanied by members of the Virgin Islands delegation and senior exchange officials, the event underscored the territory's commitment to deepening international financial ties with one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.

Premier Wheatley described the ceremonial occasion as a memorable highlight of the visit.

“It’s an experience I will not forget,” Premier Wheatley remarked following the ceremony.

Strategic gateway for capital

Based in Mumbai, the National Stock Exchange of India is the country’s largest stock exchange and ranks among the leading trading venues globally by transaction volume. Serving as India’s counterpart to premier international platforms such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ, the NSE handles more daily trading activity than any other domestic exchange.

The exchange’s technology-driven infrastructure provides a vital gateway for foreign investors seeking direct exposure to the Indian market.

Expanding cross-border financial links

The post added that for the Virgin Islands Trade Mission, the NSE represents a cornerstone institution where leading Indian fund managers, institutional brokers, and corporations regularly raise investment capital.

Territory leaders view partnerships forged at the exchange as instrumental in creating dual-access pathways. These collaborations aim to connect VI-domiciled funds and corporate vehicles with Indian investors and listing opportunities, reinforcing the Virgin Islands’ role as an international facilitator of cross-border trade and investment.

So you are trying, your way of course to advance trade with India on stock and other means. That seems credible, but how have the majority of the people of the British Virgin Islands benefited by your continuing overseas ventures. If we have, shouldn't our infrastructural development be better than is. Should not our cooperation, that is government and people working in unison for the good of all our citizens, especially locals, and belongers be better than is?

See that since you were elected elected at the 7th electoral district Representative April 2019, and the infrastructural condition of your own assignments to represent, especially the voters of the 7th electoral district positive, but haven't, what makes you think that you deserve another term as ther Representative? As you see it, you think yes, but for sure I know you don't.
Your continuing trips overseas haven't elevated our standing surficient in this world. You priorities are are not in A to Z order, but rather randomly disornized at best. Thank you Premier for your good contributions, but no thanks for your continue blind and misguided leadership of our affairs. In this life, God our Creator alone should be trusted, not the angels, crookedminded humans. We are in dire need Devine help both now and in the future, but right choices are needful.
