ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – First Lady of the United States Virgin Islands, Cecile deJongh opined that the Virgin Islands (VI) is a progressive society that has a number of women with the capability of becoming Premier of the Territory.

“It would certainly be something interesting and different. It would bring a different perspective. I think of the BVI as being more European than the USVI, and certainly in Europe female leaders are not a strange thing, and I think that would be a step in the right direction in terms of leadership and being able to bring other women into politics,” the elegant wife of Governor John P. deJongh told Virgin Islands News Online in an exclusive interview on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC), where the Women’s Empowerment Summit was held.

According to Mrs. deJongh, over the years she has met a number of impressive women from the Territory and to her “they are very independent, very intelligent and care about what happens to the community. I love there is a certain laid back attitude but at the same time take politics very seriously.”

She commended the women for knowing what the issues are, and what voting for one person means to them verses supporting someone else.

“And I think by and large the people in the USVI are very involved in politics...we are similar in that way because we encounter people that definitely have an opinion,” Mrs. deJongh added.

The First Lady was among several women invited to share their views on empowering Caribbean women, and revealed she was pleasantly surprised when she was invited to be interviewed by Tana’ania Small-Davis, an attorney, on a “Woman’s Worth” which entailed assessing a woman’s role in the modern Caribbean society.

With a smile she said, “It was very flattering”, and added she loved the set up because it was a more relaxing format than giving a speech.

Although she is the wife of a politician, Mrs. deJongh does not see herself as a political figure, but considers herself to be “pretty outspoken at times”. She is also very community minded and a voice for the people that don’t have a voice.

“Especially children who don’t have a say in what is going on around them and that’s incredibly important to me...to be able to see what their needs are and say hey this is something that needs to be given attention to,” the charismatic First Lady asserted.

The Summit was attended by 215 women.
