VI Gov't proposes 'changes to effectively manage plastics & recyclable materials'
To effectively handle plastics and recyclable materials, the ministry has proposed several measures; however, before any final policy decisions are made, the ministry is reaching out to the public to gather their opinions through a national consultation.
Minister Wheatley, in a statement on February 9, 2026, said: "This is an important step toward building a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient Virgin Islands."
Two actions to review for feedback
He highlighted two key actions for which they seek feedback. The first is a phased reduction of specific single-use plastics that are commonly littered and difficult to manage. Adequate time will be provided for businesses to transition, with exemptions for essential medical, disability, and food-safety needs.
The second measure is the introduction of a container deposit-return system for beverage containers. This system has been proven globally to reduce litter, enhance recycling, and create new economic opportunities.
‘National consultation’
Minister Wheatley emphasised that, "The national consultation is expected to be about partnership. The voices of residents, businesses, community organisations, and young people matter. Your feedback will help shape the final regulations, determine fair transition periods and ensure the system works across all our islands."
He encouraged Virgin Islanders to review the consultation document, ask questions, and share their views on this important issue.
