ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Seeing an increase in professional choices such as nurses, doctors, dentists and medical assistants, a Cane Garden Bay entrepreneur Sandrine Donovan succumbed to an idea to open a store that specialises in providing medical clothing or what are known as scrubs.

The store that opened in Road Town in the vicinity of the Adina Donavon Home for the Elderly on May 5 2012, is said to be the first store in the Virgin Islands (VI) to specialise in scrubs for persons in the medical field.

“I would love to remain the sole provider of scrubs in the Virgin Islands.”

The newly opened store that is called T.N.S Gift Shop is said to be named after of her three daughters and one deceased son.

In an exclusive interview with the owner of the store, she said that in recognising that the special clothing is difficult to get in the VI, she thought it was a good idea to create the solution to a problem that affected so many.

“When persons need scrubs they are forced to send money away to the US to get them.”

She told this news site that for the longest time the idea has been floating around in her mind and she always had the will to open the store but the finances were never there. She added that it was also difficult in finding an ideal rental space for her new business.

Mrs. Donavon said her idea became reality with the help of former At large Representatives Keith Flax and Irene Penn O’Neal, First District Representative Hon. Andrew Fahie, as well as, her husband Lloyd Donavon. “Those were the ones who really helped me and gave my dream a start.”

Before opening the store, Mrs. Donavon was selling scrubs and bags out of her vehicle.

The entrepreneur, who currently works at the Adina Donavon Home for the Elderly as a Medical Assistant, said her goal is to provide the necessary medical wardrobe to the local hospital, medical centers, clinics and private doctors.

She stated that she will be engaging in some heavy promotions in the days to come, where she will be handing out flyers to all medical facilities within the VI.

She added that she will also approach the local clinics in the weeks to come, in an effort for TNS Gift Shop to be their main provider of medical clothing.

The store that opens from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, also offers accessories for patients of the hospital or of an elderly home.

Whilst I applaud this ladies initiative, I have to wonder if the market here is really big enough to warrant a store of this kind, especially when you can buy online so easily. Do her prices compare with the internet? Is she able to make enough money to cover rent, wages, electricity etc? Lets hope this works for her.

What the hell is wrong with people like you? People like you are the same ones who go around telling people how fat they are, etc. you open your mouth and $hit comes out. This is nothing to say to a person like this, if you know the lady you would wish her well. Considering the economic climate, we should all be routing for hers and people like her economic independence. And VINO the lady is from Carrot Bay, not Cane Garden Bay. Please make the adjustment.

The person is asking valid questions. Look at how many local businesses have opened and didn't even last 6mths. Voicing your concerns about a person taking a risk is not calling them down, it's just that, CONCERN. She's selling medical wardrobe ONLY based on the article. She has to pay electricity and rent every month. How often will people buy these and how often? Maybe she should carry other products to offset the slow times. Business is not easy especially right now. She can't just sell stuff cheap, she has to sell them reasonably to make a profit to pay utilities and to restock, it's not that easy. I wish her the best but I was also concerned, hopefully she has done her research and she will get the support she needs locally.

I guess you didnt read what I had to say. I applauded her initiative and finished off by saying that I hope it works. In life we have to be realistic, I was asking some very legitimate questions as it is a sad fact that most business fail in their first year.
