VI delegation off to Hansen’s funeral; USVI-BVI Friendship Day postponed

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) is leading a small delegation today, Friday, October 20, 2023, to St Croix, US Virgin Islands (USVI) for the funeral of popular USVI former Senator Alicia Hansen aka ‘Chucky’.

The deceased former senator, who has close relatives and friends in Long Look on Tortola, died on October 2, 2023.

Dr Wheatley’s delegation includes Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) and Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Office Dr Lavon Chalwell-Brewley.

The body of the late Hansen laid in state at the USVI Legislature on St Croix on Thursday, October 19, 2023, with funeral service and burial scheduled for today.

USVI Governor Albert A. Bryan Jr announced that all US Virgin Islands flags will be flown at half-staff on Friday, October 20, 2023, to honour the memory and service of the legendary political figure.

According to our affiliate online news site, The VI Consortium, reflecting on the late senator's legacy, Governor Bryan remarked in his proclamation that Senator Hansen "was a fearless advocate for the people of the US Virgin Islands, a true champion, and an unwavering voice for her constituents."

USVI-BVI Friendship Day postponed

Meanwhile, the 51st celebration of the USVI-BVI Friendship Day scheduled for Sunday, October 22, 2023, on St Thomas has been postponed due to Tropical Strom Tammy, which threatens the Greater Virgin Islands.

The event this year is to be hosted by Governor Bryan and Lieutenant Governor Tregenza A. Roach Esq.

The main highlight of the annual event was cultural presentations and dining.

No new date has been announced by the USVI Governor’s Office.
