NANNY CAY, VI – The recently concluded BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival has been recognized for its prominent depiction of elements of the Virgin Islands' culture and cultural arts.

Director of Culture, Dr. Katherine A. Smith said that there is a strong maritime culture in the Virgin Islands and that she was gratified and encouraged to see the interest in the activities including a maritime exhibition.

The maritime exhibition that was featured daily, resulted from a collaborative effort between the BVI Spring Regatta, the Department of Culture, and Creative Waves. The exhibition focused on both traditional and modern aspects of maritime culture, highlighting their enduring significance to the Virgin Islands.

“From the traditional Tortola sloop activities to our modern-day activities such as our professions in the yachting industry, as captains, as fishers, our speedboat beach recreational activities and of course many come from far and wide to sail the sailing capital of the world. This was depicted beautifully. It was a pleasure to work with the BVI Spring Regatta, Creative Waves, and of course the BVI Tourist Board,” Dr. Katherine Smith added.

More arts & culture @ BVI Spring Regatta

Director of the BVI Spring Regatta Ms. Caylee Smith said the committee was thrilled with its first attempt to have more art and culture at the BVI Spring Regatta.

“We are so pleased to have partnered with the Department of Culture and Creative Waves to have Virgin Islands maritime heritage represented at the biggest sailing event in the Territory,” Ms. Smith said.

She added, “We are thrilled that residents and visitors loved having art at the regatta village. The community came together to deliver a stunning exhibition, dance and music and we look forward to seeing what our community wants to share next year.

The Department of Culture has since expressed gratitude to sponsors of the events which includes RiteWay; the Royal Virgin Islands Yacht Club; Lane’s Sail and Canvas; HiddenPoint Charter Services and Experiences by Feli.

Kindly inform us about the 'local VIslander artist' who was assigned the task of painting those cultural sails. 'NOT ONE' The existence of this apartheid system has been endured for an extended period, and it is imperative that these people leave our land expeditiously.

Why is Dr. K Smith taking credit this for maritime art and culture exhibitions provided by other people, groups and organizations that worked on their own? She never appeared at the BVISR during its 7 days of activity from 1-7 April when the participants were ashore. Showing up at a regatta during the day when the yachts are out racing is NOT a valid reason to claim credit for cultural events. She needs to be on stage in the evening of each day during the awards to validate her cultural claims. She was never on stage all 7 nights.

The true heritage of the Virgin Islands would not have been able to be showcased by the 'local' Virgin Islanders if it were not for the Department of Culture. Please refrain from trying to hijack our people's heritage. Go Home and Find Your Own...if you have one to find!

Please do not expect so much of the Director of Culture. Too much pressure.
