ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Virgin Islands has confirmed 9 more COVID-19 cases related to a 12th case of the virus, Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) has announced tonight Friday, August 21, 2020.

He said since the confirmation of case number 12 as announced on August 19, 2020, authorities have since pursued aggressive contact tracing resulting in the identification of primary and secondary contacts linked to the case.

East End & Anegada flagged as source of cases

"Out of those investigations, 10 additional persons identified as primary or close contacts were quarantined and tested and 9 of those results were positive for the virus that causes COVID-19."

While the symptoms are mild at this time for the 9 persons, Hon Malone said they remain in quarantine.

"The cases that were confirmed today, are mainly located on the Eastern End of Tortola and on the island of Anegada, however, our findings point to secondary and tertiary contacts residing in several other communities throughout the territory," he said.

Tonight's announcement points to community spread of the virus as he also mentioned that some contacts have been linked to heavily patronised nightspots and festive events that took place at the beginning of August 2020.

Local testing enhanced - Hon Malone

Hon Malone said local testing, however, has been enhanced through testing kits from Public Health England and from procurements done by the Government of the Virgin Islands.

Case #12 was presented at the emergency room after experiencing moderate symptoms and no recent travel history before testing positive for the virus.

With the discovery of 9 more cases, the VI now has 21 total confirmed cases, with 12 currently active, 8 recovered and 1 death.

The bright side: with the exception of the first case, all others recovered.

The first case's death was possibly due to late medical attention.

@Howester.. why you have to always be on here talking nonsense.. your rhetoric is so tiresome right now.. It’s stupid people like you breeding all this xenophobic hatred.. Expats please ignore this fool.. All BVIslanders want is Job fairness the board, respect and to live peacefully with you all .i want to believe the majority of us don’t feel this way towards you all.. this is very sad and troubling news for now we have “community spread”.. we all need to be on our knees and praying for those affected That they recover, and God’s Continued Mercies for our country and the world at large.. I kept saying all this xenophobic hatred back and forth is bringing sin against our land..not saying this is what has happened but we all need to show more love one to another.. I kept saying why are our bars and night clubs still open when a lot of them are closed Around the world.. our Best weapons: Prayer, masks, social distancing and good hand hygiene-not just cleaning your palms.(for those of you that don’t know how to “properly” wash your hands for 20 secs- you can you tube same).. it is my prayer In Jesus’s Name that all 9 recover and we have no more cases..I am begging for ALL of us to PLEASE do what we have to do to slow the spread of this virus.. Loving each other is protecting each other..

Sorry to say, I felt this was going to happen. Everyday I see friends and groups hanging out, patting each other on the shoulder, shaking hands and NOT wearing masks, as though the virus didn't exist. I hoped because our infection numbers were so low that no one would catch it.....sorry to say, they are targets and are spreading it.

Not just bars and restaurants should targeted. Yes the bars made big noise to be allowed to reopen Now they have to be closed. Can’t control there businesses. Every Friday afternoons large gatherings of men can be seen all around town, outside Supermarkets, Stores, under trees drinking beers/rum. No social distancing, no mask and they are all up in each other’s face. Any one see the men over by the Pier Park Taxi Stand. Everyday playing Dominos? Not adhering to any of the Covid Protocols. This kind of activity needs to be curtailed. It’s a disaster waiting to happen. It is a shame and so sad, that this behavior is allowed to continue in the wake of this pandemic. Well it hit home in a way we don’t want believe. Despite the most recent information, persons are still behaving recklessly, Not wearing mask or wearing them incorrectly. Not maintaining the social distancing. It is so unfortunate. We are responsible for our own health and if you care for others and your family Do the correct thing to protect everyone. Make it less daunting for the Health Department.
Well thank God the Cuban Health Team is here and out of Quarantine just in time.

Does that were given the job and power to insure the rules were followed didn't care once they got their pay check.

You see how those in power money power can bring down a country. The government did so much but the greed for money is what cause this. I hope the government realize now that its fast money locals want and dont care how they get it. Endangered the whole islands just doing their illegal run to rock and back. Corona did not just fly over. They need to get to the bottom of this and chared everyone involved.

They know from the inception that there are illegal runs to and fro Rock and yet they did not secure the borders.
They were too busy putting unnecessary implementation in place for expats.

But sure lets blame the 'island people'

So, how would everyone feel if this was caused by someone bringing in 10 people from St Thomas to the BVI on a private boat while the boarders were closed (for money)? I think I would be pissed off. Why would the BVI allow this to happen with no arrests? How would you feel if this person worked for BVI Customs? Yes, that would piss you off too. How would you feel if that person dropped off some of them in Tortola and also in Anegada? Check - you would be pissed off. Get ready to get Pissed Off....

No doubt those in positions saw people who should not be on the island at parties and turned a blind eye.

Some people think it’s contained because the additional tests came back negative.

      It’s not that simple.

Many people have no symptoms and could still spread the virus. Some may be afraid to get tested or some may have no symptoms yet.
