Event moved to Tuesday for safety & comfort

Organisers have announced that the originally scheduled Friday (August 7) motorcade and ceremony have been postponed to Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at 4:00 PM in a joint decision by the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs & Sports, the BVI Olympic Committee (BVIOC), and the BVI Athletics Association (BVIAA). 

The change was made “in shared priority for community comfort and safety,” according to the organisers’ statement, which also apologised for any inconvenience caused by the date shift. 

New route & ceremony details

The updated motorcade will depart from behind the Central Administration Complex and proceed to Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park, where an official recognition ceremony and fan meet-and-greet will be held. 

Residents and visitors are encouraged to line the route waving Virgin Islands flags, making noise, and showing their support as the athletes pass.

Adaejah T. Hodge among the honourees

Among the athletes being honoured is sprint star Adaejah T. Hodge, who made history in Glasgow by becoming the first female athlete from the Virgin Islands to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal.  

Hodge captured the women’s 200m title on July 31 with a time of 22.07 seconds, after setting a new Commonwealth Games record of 22.01 in the semifinals the day before. 

Her victory marked the Territory’s first-ever gold in the 200m and added to the VI’s growing reputation as a powerhouse in Caribbean sprinting. 

Call for “overwhelming BVI love and pride”

In a Facebook post, the organisers urged the community to surround the athletes with “overwhelming BVI love and pride” as the Territory celebrates their dedication, talent, and representation on the international stage.

The event is intended as both a thank-you to the athletes and a showcase of national unity, with officials expressing confidence that the community will turn out in full force to give the champions the massive celebration they deserve.

Residents are reminded to bring VI flags and come ready to cheer as the Territory honours its Commonwealth Games heroes.
