VI celebrates Easter “Guyanese style” [Photoslide Included]
This is the 20th year the Association of Guyanese in the BVI has put on the annual fundraiser which was held yesterday Monday April 10, 2012, and attracted persons from all walks of society who use the opportunity as a family and socialization fete.
The kite-flying competition attracted several kites including some really miniature ones, which were hanging from vehicles' antennas to large ones of over six feet.
It was a spectacle to behold, however, many hard core kite lovers complained of the influx of ready-made plastic kites, which are beginning to take over the event and taking away from the tradition of making one’s own kite.
One famous kite maker Mr. Leroy James had the largest kite, of over six feet tall and said this is the fourth year he has been participating with the same kite. However, this year he changed the paper with “stronger” ones he acquired from St. Marteen.
Another young kite lover saw no qualms in purchasing the ready made kites as he said “they are nicer and comes in all my favourite characters”.
For their efforts, James won the cast prize of $75 for the largest kite while Cedrica Baptiste was presented with $50 for having the most patriotic kite.
Apart from the kite flying competition many enjoyed the wide array of Guyanese food and pastries and even fun games. The musical chairs was a big hit this year and attracted many participants, including the older folks.
At the end of it all, the Association felt their 20th event was a success as they continue their efforts to raise funds and put on an event that is being enjoyed by many.

President of the association Marvin Grant said the kite flying competition allows the Association to meet their objectives, one of which is to assist in the field of education, both in the Virgin Islands and Guyana. Recently, the BVI Seventh Day Adventist School has been the recipient of $1000 from the group.
Grant said they also assist in other areas in the Virgin Islands community and singled out their donation of Trophy for the high school debating competition.
Grant said this year’s event was a great one and the general public is always welcome to participate in the events.
Meanwhile, Digicel has partnered with the Association of Guyanese for the past three years to bring this fun event to the public. According to Marketing Executive, Angela Burns, this is a much anticipated event for many children as well, who look forward to the kite flying and the fun and games, including the bouncy castle and the slides, which were sponsored again this year by Digicel.
Digicel also donated a cellphone with SIM Card as one of the day’s prizes.
