ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Hundreds of vehicles stretched along the roadways throughout the territory of the Virgin Islands (VI) celebrating the accomplishments of four Olympians who participated in the Senior and Junior Olympics this year- Kyron A. McMaster, Chantel E. Malone, Elinah Phillp and Adaejah Hodge.

The celebration took the form of a massive motorcade simultaneously on the islands of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost van Dyke on August 3, 2021.

The event, which was broadcast live on the Facebook page of the Government of the Virgin Islands and JTV Channel 55, saw a mammoth turnout, with Tortola being the largest due to it being the most populated island of the Virgin Islands.

The Tortola leg was led by Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1), starting at Festival Grounds in Road Town the motorcade. It proceeded west, with many joining the already long line of vehicles along the way.

Motorcade traversed territory

They motorcade went through West End, into Cane Garden Bay, through “Country”, into East End and back to the starting point.

Many persons lined the streets while some remained on their porches, waving the flag of the VI as a show of appreciation for the Olympians.

The motorcade ended shortly after 8:00 pm, an hour outside the curfew; however, Premier Fahie has said permission was sought and granted, given the significance of the celebration.

According to the Premier, more celebrations are in line when the athletes return to the territory.

Accomplishments

Swimmer Elinah Phillip placed second in her heat but did not advance. She was 38th overall and the fastest swimmer from the Caribbean for the Women's 50m Freestyle.

Chantel E. Malone reached the final of the Women's Long Jump where she placed 12th.

Kyron A. McMaster finished 4th in the 400m Hurdles Final, which is being dubbed as the greatest Olympic race in history.

Malone and McMaster are the first athletes from the Virgin Islands to qualify for an Olympic final.

Meanwhile, Adaejah Hodge captured three gold medals at the recently concluded US Track and Field (USTAF) Junior Olympics in Jacksonville, Florida.

Hodge won the Long Jump, 400m and 200m, competing in the 15-16 Girls Division.

No way i'm putting track over emancipation. If the real slave trade was thought at the schools then y'all would have seen clearly covid cannot compare to emancipation in no way or form unless you live in fear. The oppressors killed us off like numbers of sand but motocade is being held for olympics instead of emancipation during this time. Do not be a sheep out here like the motorcade participants. Enough said.

I thought otherwise... in lieu of the Festival Parade (a casualty of Covid for a second year in a row)

I bet those athletes would have rather be here for the celebration. We couldn't wait? Airplane will land and 30 persons will be there to greet them. Foolishness

I am at the bakery trying to buy a mask to enter and the health authority give me a ticket, while all these people without a mask roaming on the streets after 8 pm August 3rd..where was the police to attend curfew laws, the law is bent on who people and official knows..soon let's see how the government will survive with local doesn't pay tax...government owes millions to social security that's the reason why old age pension cannot be paid.

Truly our athletes need to be recognized but the better way was to coordinate their return and have the motorcade parading them when they return.

Hope all the motorcade participants were vaccinated. If not then Tortola will have a motorcade surge in a few weeks just like the late June surge from all the mid-June school graduation parties.

    Trivia Question....
Who was the first VI athlete to compete in a summer olympics?

Congratulations to all the athletes and by all means let's recognize them but to have a parade before they even return is complete nonsense and simply a political display . Some things never change.
