Virgin Islands (VI) drag racing teams took part in the King Ocean International Grenada Drags 2026 on the weekend and walked away with big prizes. Photo: Provided

The event, hosted by the Grenada Motor Club, took place on September 26 and 27, 2026, at the Pearls International Speedway in St Andrew, Grenada. Two hundred and fifty registered cars and teams from across the Eastern Caribbean participated in the event.

“It actually ended up being the biggest drag race in the Leeward and Windward Islands this year. There were 250 cars. Cars came from as far as the United States, all the way to Guyana, Trinidad and Suriname, including Barbados,” Dr Michael A. Turnbull told Virgin Islands News Online on September 28, 2026.

VI placed 1st in 13 Second Class

In the 13 Second Class, the VI car, driven by Ian Galbreath and owned by Esau Rohan Andrews, aka ‘Black Lion’, came out on top. There were over 16 cars registered in that class. 

“We are grateful that we had a contingency of over 6 people. Grenada was a lovely country; we were invited to come back to Saint Lucia. It shows that we are moving forward.”

He added that while the organisation of the event could have been better, there was a lot of opportunity for growth and cultural exchange. Grenada International Drags, Dr Turnbull said, shows the importance of cultural tourism and motor sports.

First international trophy 

“Speed Shop VI, Hurricane Racing Crew representing the Team BVI, and we did an amazing job. We now have an international trophy and a first-place trophy, and that is the first ever at this scale of event.”

King Ocean transported the cars from the VI to Grenada free of charge. 

Dr Turnbull thanked the team’s sponsors, Fly BVI, the Ministry of Communications and Works and Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5), the BVI Ports Authority and all their families and friends who supported them. 

Fly BVI pilot Jeremy Charles, who was born in Grenada and raised in Virgin Gorda, piloted the team’s flight. That voyage marked his first time back to Grenada in fifteen years. 

The full team comprised Kimron Mills (Tuner), Ian Galbreath (Tuner),  Kareem Douglas (Driver/Mechanic), Musa Clax (Captain, Hurricane Racing Crew/Owner), Terry Smith (Owner, Dodge Hellcat), Bernard Benjamin, Marvin St Jean (Captain, Speed Shop), Devon Joseph (Driver), and Dr Michael A. Turnbull (Owner/Driver).
