ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Motorists were pleasantly surprised last Saturday January 28, 2012 when 25 cadets - looking impressive in green army fatigues and fake guns - were on an expedition hike that started from the Elmore Stoutt High school (ESHS), proceeded up Joe’s Hill, down Great Mountain and ended back at ESHS.

Virgin Islands News Online spoke with Captain Selwyn Rock, Commandant of the VI Cadet Corps (VICC) who said the hike focused on “fitness, weapon training and a sense of responsibility.”

“Some of them were doing the exercise for the first time, and in the end they did well. They all reached back safe and in high spirits,” he added.

The Cadet corps is all about youth development based on “military type discipline” training, Rock explained.

The cadets go through various levels that give them the exposure to leadership and as they rise in the ranks, they are given more responsibilities to train the junior cadets that enter the programme.

Young persons, male or female, between the ages of eleven and nineteen years of age are eligible to join.

Parents, who are interested in having their children be a part of the organization, can contact any Adult Officer or Instructor, or visit the corps’ website athttp://vicadets.WebStarts.com for more information.

Congratulations to the organisers of this program. It is good to see young people involved in something so positive. Parents encourage your youngsters to get involved. Anything that teaches self discipline is a good thing.

I honestly don't think that guns should be included in the training of these young people. I can't see what role it plays are we trying to say that some sort of violence is allowed in training a child to do the right thing. The only role a gun will play in the future of these children is if they are being trained for a future in some sort of law enforcement or a future army. It would be ashame if only violence or a threat of violence is the answer.
