VI boxing fans rejoice in Mayweather victory!
Virgin Islands News Online visited a couple of bars to hear what fans had to say before the fight that had an all-time gate record of $20,003,150 set by the 16,746 in attendance.
At the Paragon Conference and Entertainment Centre in Fish Bay, a number of persons were glued to the massive screens in keen anticipation of Mayweather maintaining his unbeaten record.
In fact Paragon was well prepared for the occasion and welcomed the large turnout of customers with a number of drink specials and promotions. Caribbean Cellers and Digicels were notably present at the event.
“I am very pleased. It s basically what I was expecting, approximately a hundred to a hundred and fifty people,” said General Manager of Paragon Conference and Entertainment Centre, Mr Nathan Wong who then admitted that although he felt Floyd Mayweather was the better fighter he wanted Alvarez to create an upset.
Noting that he is not exactly a boxing fan but follows Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao’s fights, Mr Wong said the entity would have more such promotions in the future and reminded persons to log on to eventsbvi.com to keep up to date with the various events at the Centre.
While at the Paragon, Virgin Islands News Online spoke to boxing fan, Frank Mahoney who was excited about the two huge High-Def screens over at the Paragon Conference Entertainment Centre and he complimented the service while stating that the food and drinks were great.
His prediction was the same as his wife, Asiyah, no one would floor Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather!
Stuart Donovan said he was with Mayweather all the way and agreed that the atmosphere was nice over at the Paragon.
Meanwhile, over at Le Petite Sports Club Mark related that he was simply waiting to see the downfall of Mayweather. While stopping short of predicting that Mayweather would be knocked out he said, “If he loses I’ll be happy.”
Steve Parillon also held Mayweather as the overwhelming favourite for the fight, “He’s gonna survive the fight, that’s how he does… he’s a survivor.”
Eighth District Representative, Hon. Marlon A. Penn also felt Mayweather would stick it out and rightfully predicted that the fight would go the distance. Afterwards, he stated that Alvarez became frustrated during the fight and lost on that basis to the veteran Mayweather.
Proprietor of Le Petite Clive Baronville simply had this to say, “Mayweather is going to win, he’s more experienced and he’s quicker.”
There were some persons who were cheering for Alvarez, the 23-year-old Mexican hero, but he was no match for the brilliance of Mayweather, who did as he pleased in Rounds 1 through 12 in the biggest fight in years.
The fight likely will set the record for the richest event in boxing history and could challenge the all-time pay-per-view record of 2.44 million buys. Both those records were set by Mayweather's 2007 win against Oscar De La Hoya.
Although Mayweather cruised, the judges incredibly made it a majority decision.
Judges Dave Moretti (116-112) and Craig Metcalfe (117-111) had it for Mayweather, while judge C.J. Ross scored it 114-114.

Meh. Won money on the fight, only because I know Mayweather's camp prone to picking targets that ain't going to ruffle the 'Money'.
