ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has announced that the Virgin Islands will be implementing an immediate block where no cruise ships would be allowed to call on the Territory within a 30-day period starting Saturday, March 14, 2020.

The announcement follows a new set of measures cabinet has agreed to, to protect the Territory from the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) with the Premier making the announcement this afternoon, Friday Mach 13, 2020.

Ports Limited to three

As part of a slew of measures, “cabinet also agreed to the limiting of the number of international ports of entry in terms of passengers to three. The ports are Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, Road Town and West End Ferry Terminals, and one (1) cargo port of entry – Port Purcell,” Hon Fahie said in his statements.

He said the limit to the number of ports are subject to the relevant Order or legislative amendment, “these measures are necessary to facilitate the effective screening of passengers.”

In addition, Cabinet endorsed the establishment of a technical team named the ‘Coronavirus Economic and Fiscal Stability Taskforce’ will come into play to make recommendations and provide advice on the economic sustainability of the Territory over a six-month period.

A number of local festivals will also be postponed, “Cabinet decided that the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival and the 2020 Spring Regatta be postponed and that other future mass gatherings will be further reviewed at a meeting of the National Emergency Operations Centre on Monday, 16th March,” he said.

Ban for travel to & from affected countries

According to the Leader of Government Business, decisions have also been taken for enhanced screening for visitors who travelled to, from or through a high-risk country within a period of 14 days or less.

This screening will commence immediately preceding the visitor’s arrival in the Territory and will be subject to more procedures with possible quarantine for a period of up to 14 days, with the suspension of travellers who travelled to, from or through affected countries as defined by the WHO.

The Premier also noted that discussions have been had on possible price gouging and other related matters and that will be dealt with through the Department of Trade, Investment Promotions as well as other stakeholders.

“Your Government has zero-tolerance for this type of negative behaviour,” he said.

Thank you thank you thank you Mr. Honorable Premier. You are truly looking out for us! I was fearful the cruise ships would keep coming and infect us. People flying here too from other countries are a threat, but you are trying your best, so again I Thank You! Better a little poorer than dead.

The plowman has overtaken the reaper. This is one hell of a nightmare that we are being rudely awakened to. I can only imagine the Premiere's stress level. Stay calm but focused its gonna be more terrible than Irma because it will last for a much longer period and stress is gonna take its toll on the weak. Sorry we were caught in such a vulnerable situation as far as self sufficiency is concerned. We must resolve that this will never be the case again. A serious program of agriculture must be implemented now, especially that we are about to experience the consequences of not doing so sooner. I know that Irma reeked havoc on the country but we could have recovered sufficiently to have something more than what is now available. Please sir its time for action, no more lip service, we have some difficult days ahead and must take the lesson learned as correction. I will be in the trenches with you even though I feel sad and disappointed because we could have done better.

      A nobrainer .
The cruise ships had already announced their 30 day halt so Mr Premier had no choice but seized the opportunity and claimed the decision.

You are correct, the shipping companies had already cancelled, so the Premier had no choice, what he did is not relevant because it was already done by the cruise lines.

Prevention is better than cure. Good move. The bad part is that a lot of people in the industry depends on these Cruiseship to pay their bills. Most of them are pay check to pay check. .This Cruiseship business put bread on so much people families table... U have to be in it to understand it Any way. God will provide... I do hope when we reopen for business we open up with like 3 one day. Hope the tourist board is working. Other countries are working for this business...

Dishonesty is another one of his Christian method of doing things.
Treating the people as if they are simple minded fools or that they are all graduates of his infamous dumbing down educational program.

@ overseas students there are persons who are checking on them for sure. They will be fine they will adhere to the information been put out.. but as a territory let's pray for them also because emotions and anxiety can run high at times we are human.. Those of you who know some of their telephone numbers, Facebook page, WhatsApp or by whatever means go the extra mile and reassure them that you have not forgotten them. This goes a long way it's not easy being away from your family especially in a crisis. Even right here at home many of our people are in panic mode let's hold one another in our prayer.

Cruise tourism is the major source of visits to the VI and tourism is a major employer and provides direct, indirect and induce employment for hotel workers, taxi drivers, souvenir vendors, beach vendors, boat captains, marina workers, ferry operators, restaurant operators,……..etc. As such, government had to strike a delicate balance between public health and safety and cruise ship arrivals.

Undoubtedly, suspending cruise arrivals for 30 days was a tough and probably a gut wrenching decision but public health and safety had to be the priority. Protecting the public is a major governing responsibility. The decision probably will exact some financial hardships on taxi drivers, souvenir vendors and others engage in the tourism sector. The question is how can any financial hardships be alleviated? Perhaps the HOA can authorize and appropriate a funding package to help affected personnel in tourism and other areas. Though the focus is on cruise ship 30-day suspension, the other actions are also important in preventing, containing and mitigating the impact of the Novel Coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic.
