ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The [British] Virgin Islands has found itself on a list of 36 countries banned from Russia’s airspace.

The ban by Russia comes in retaliation to the growing list of sanctions imposed on it by governments worldwide, including the United Kingdom and US, over its invasion of Ukraine.

Sanctions against Russia by certain countries had included a ban on Russian airlines from using their airspace.

36 countries on the list

Russian aviation regulator, Rosaviatsia, released the following statement on February 28, 2022.

“A restriction has been imposed on flights for airlines of 36 countries in accordance with international law as a retaliatory measure for the ban imposed by the European states on the flights of commercial airliners operated by Russian airlines and/or registered in Russia.”

This entails that these airlines will have to take longer routes — therefore raising the cost of fuel and perhaps tickets.

The countries on the list are: Albania, Anguilla, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark (including Greenland, Faroe Islands, Territorial Seas), Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Gibraltar, Hungary, Jersey, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

It is unclear why the [British] Virgin Islands, along with Anguilla, has made the list when other British Overseas Territories have not made the list

The Virgin Islands does not have a national airline.

VI praying for peace & good sense to prevail

Meanwhile, Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) was invited to comment on the issue but had not responded up to time of publication.

The Government of the Virgin Islands on February 28, 2022; however, had said in a statement on the Ukraine invasion by Russia that a country’s sovereignty and right to self-determination should be respected.

“In the modern civilised world, sovereignty, the right of people to self-determination, and the principles of international law must all be respected.”

The VI Government had also said it continues to monitor, with immense concern, the situation in Europe.

“We in the Virgin Islands pray for the safety of all the people who are innocently caught in the middle of this conflict. We hope for a speedy resolution, and for peace and good sense to prevail,” according to the statement.

I’m quite sure the BVI can asked to be removed from the list. Why only the BVI and Anguilla made the list? My opinion is these are questions that needs to be addressed. What is really going on. Is the BVI and Anguilla caught up in something? Just something to think about and be concerned about.

The Russian oligarchs have registered their planes in many offshore territories but not BVI or Anguilla because the process is so inefficient here.

Most Russian Cargo airlines are registered in Cayman. Thus if they ban Cayman registered vessels, most Russian cargo airlines will be prohibited from going back to their own country.

Something is up with that, there has got to be a reason as to why the BVI is on that list.America is not on the list, St.Thomas and St.Croix is not on the list, Puerto Rico is not on the list. Why tiny little BVI.

The Premier should look into this matter and say something to the public as to why the BVI is on the list.

I hope we are praying for our African brothers and sisters in Ukraine who are being mistreated and not allowed to safely leave or take up a safe space on a train, because they are Africans. I will not pray for anyone who wants salvation and much-needed help when they themselves are treating Africans as less than human beings that need as much help to escape as they do!. This BS has got to stop and until then, Ukraine will not get any prayers from me!!!!!
