ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - 12-year-old Z'Niah Hutchinson Corea competed at the USA Track and Field Regional’s this past weekend in New York and came away with a gold and silver medal performance.

Having qualified for the Regional’s in 3 events at the Connecticut State Championship, Corea turned in a silver medal result in the 400m when she ran a Personal Best of 1:01.04 seconds.

She then turned to the sand and, although leaping short of her 5.08m PB, won the Gold with a distance of 4.60metres.

Corea, who has represented the VI at both the CUT Games and Leewards Youths, will next head to the USATF Junior Olympics in North Carolina from July 22 – 28 where she will compete in both events.

Her Long Jump gold already means she is the Region 1 Junior Olympic Champion.

The former Isabella Morris Primary School student and member of Top Notch Track Club will join over 6,000 other Age Group Athletes who have qualified for the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships held during the last week of July. Entry for the national championship is based on athlete performances at preliminary, Association, and Regional levels.

Dating back to the mid-1960's, the USATF Junior Olympic programme is the most visible youth athlete developmental programme in the world. Nearly 70,000 youth athletes compete each year in the Junior Olympic Track & Field and Cross Country programmes. Many of America's Olympians began as youth athletes, including stars such as Maurice Greene, Allyson Felix, Bryan Clay, John Godina, Deena Kastor, and Allen Johnson.

Through a series of progressional events consisting of preliminary, Association, and Regional meets, athletes have the opportunity to advance to the National Championships in track and field and cross country.

Once USATF members, participants can enter the Junior Olympics either as part of a USATF club or as "unattached." Competition takes place in six (6) 2-year age divisions, from 8 & under through 17-18.
