VG United thrash new boys Sea Argo in Terry Evans Cup
FC Sea Argo were of course playing their first competitive match as a newly formed team and at the start matched VG United all the way until a couple of defensive errors allowed, first Thomas Albert, and then Devante Samuel, to score for VG.
Rather than fold up, FC Sea Argo then dominated the next period of play until Charles Frederick, with a stooping header and another Samuel strike gave VG a 4-0 cushion at the half time break.
FC Sea Argo started the second half brightly and got a goal back via Osaniss Bassaragh, but with a replacement goalkeeper and a lack of options from the bench, the new boys again wilted under constant pressure and further goals leaked in from Makimbo Demming (2), Jeanmal Samuel, Daniel Joseph and an Albert free kick to make the final score 9-1.
Coaches’ reaction
VG United’s Coach, Glen Bascombe, who said the aim for VG United was just to go as far as possible in the Cup, was pleased with the result. “We came here today in the hope of doing much better than we did in the National League. We stepped up our game and have worked really hard to get this result.”
Player/Coach of new boys, FC Sea Argo, Gavin J. Foster noted that his team will have to up their standards going forward. “We don’t have the calibre of players to compete yet, but the boys stuck to it and I’m proud of them. We lost our way as the goals started going in and lost our shape, but we will lift our heads and work harder to erase the flaws.”
VG United now await the winner between Sugar Boys and Old Madrid in the next round, whilst FC Sea Argo will play the Rebels or Panthers.
Action resumes today at 5:00 PM with Sugar Boys against Old Madrid, followed at 7:PM by Islanders against One Love.
