VG landfill reopens following fire

- residents warned that residual smoke may remain

SPANISH TOWN, Virgin Gorda, VI- The Virgin Gorda Dumpsite has reopened for normal operations following the successful containment of a fire there on July 3, 2026.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development warned residents in a press release on July 8, 2026, that while the fire has been extinguished, some residual smoke remains in the area. “The smoke is continuing to dissipate; however, members of the public are encouraged to limit the amount of time spent at the dumpsite until conditions fully improve.”

Quick action of first responders 

The release added that the Department of Waste Management, working in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service, the BVI Airports Authority, the Water and Sewerage Department, and local water truck operators, responded swiftly to the incident to suppress the fire and secure the site.

“The Ministry thanks the responding agencies for their coordinated efforts and extends its appreciation to the Virgin Gorda community for its patience, cooperation, and understanding throughout the response.”

The public was further told that conditions at the site will remain under monitoring by the Department of Waste Management, and additional updates will be provided should they become necessary.
