VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI- Local leaders, with the backing of corporate entities on Virgin Gorda in the Ninth District, have made a commitment to continue providing a hot meal for families in need beyond the period of lockdown and curfews in the Virgin Islands.

According to the Ninth District Representative and Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration, Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley, the move to provide hot meals for residents on the Sister Island was necessary due to hardships brought on many families due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic affecting the Territory.

In excess of 450 reached

“In Virgin Gorda, where it’s mainly tourism and construction and with both lockdowns, there will definitely be hardship and we are responding in several ways. Providing hot meals is one that is well needed and together with the support of a number of businesses we are reaching in excess of 450 persons weekly,” Hon Wheatley stated on Thursday, April 23, 2020.

The Ninth District Representative explained that at the get-go they started feeding 100 persons and as more contributions flowed in the meals were being served to persons three days per week.

“In the first instance, we are looking at having this going for a few more months.”

A supplement to Gov’t’s initiative

Hon Wheatley explained that the hot meal initiative is not part of the care packages to families being distributed by Government.

“This is to supplement what the Premier [Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1)] is doing. Persons are very happy with the care packages. I am not sure what these persons would have done without it, so I am very grateful to our Premier Andrew Fahie for putting this in place.”

Hon Wheatley also expressed gratitude to all the civil servants, volunteers, organisations, companies and private individuals toiling daily to ensure the Government-funded packages reach families across the Territory.

According to the legislator, his District received 495 care packages from Government and others will be getting theirs today, April 24, 2020, and further on as the programme continues.

The Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government is spending $2M to ensure no one goes hungry during the curfew in place to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
