VG cashier allegedly used customer’s bank card to buy Gucci earrings
Jakeya Fergus, who is just shy of her 19th birthday, made an appearance at the Magistrate’s Court in John’s Hole on Tortola, charged with three counts of theft
She was granted $40,000 signed bail and was not made to plead to the offences on Monday, September 9, 2019.
Prosecutors said Fergus obtained the information on the bank card when the complainant paid for items in a local supermarket.
Using the information, she was able to purchase the pair of earrings worth $200 and tickets to Virgin Gorda for the price of $30.
She also paid for food at a restaurant in the Valley on Virgin Gorda, among other things.
‘Card belonged to my boyfriend’
Prosecutors said Fergus allegedly said the bank details were that of her boyfriend.
In other cases, when she was questioned about the lack of a physical card, she blamed her clumsiness for forgetting it at her home.
“You always forgetting your card girl,” one ferry boat employee reportedly told her.
Suspicious charges
Meanwhile, the court heard that on February 7, 2019, when the Complainant attempted to withdraw cash from the ATM, the machine indicated that there were insufficient funds in his account to process the transaction.
Prosecutors said the Complainant then visited the main bank branch located in Road Town to make a complaint.
It was then that he was informed of the number of charges to his bank card.
The matter was reported to the police who then launched their investigations and arrested and charged Fergus who had also signed the receipts after each purchase.
The purchases were made between January and February this year.
Lawyer Patrick D. Thompson represents Fergus, who is scheduled to return to court on Thursday, September 12, 2019.
