ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Deputy Governor David D. Archer Jr has hailed the life and contributions to the public service by the late former Commissioner of Police, legislator and attorney Mr Vernon E. Malone, who passed away on May 4, 2024, at the age of 76.

“Mr Malone's life story is one of dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of our society. His journey from the classrooms of Tortola to the highest echelons of law enforcement and public service is a testament to his relentless pursuit of excellence and his belief in the power of education and hard work,” Mr Archer remarked in a statement today, May 22, 2024.

Trailblazer & visionary leader

According to Mr Archer, as the Virgin Islands' first local Commissioner of Police, Mr Malone was not only a trailblazer but also a visionary leader. “His tenure as Commissioner from 1992 to 2002 was marked by significant advancements in the capabilities and services of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF). He was instrumental in establishing critical units such as the Family and Juvenile Unit, the Major Crime Team, and the Scenes of Crime Unit, each of which has played a vital role in the evolution of our policing and justice systems.”

Beyond his contributions to Law Enforcement, Mr Archer said Mr Malone's passion for education and professional development was evident in his efforts to open opportunities for officers to achieve academic degrees and improve their welfare. His legacy includes a generation of police officers who have been inspired to pursue higher learning and to serve with integrity and professionalism.

“After a distinguished career with the RVIPF, Mr Malone continued to serve our islands with the same zeal and dedication as a legislator in the House of Assembly from 2007 to 2011. His legislative work reflected his deep understanding and love of the law and his commitment to the advancement of the Virgin Islands.”

Inspiring example for the youth

The Deputy Governor said Mr Malone's educational journey, from a teacher to achieving his law degree and becoming an esteemed legal practitioner, serves as an inspiring example for the youth, reminding them that their origins do not define their destiny.

“As the Deputy Governor and head of the Public Service, I recognise the immense contributions Mr Malone has made to the private and public sectors. His legacy will continue to influence our work and the principles by which we serve the public.

“We mourn his loss, we celebrate his life, and we commit to honouring his legacy by upholding the values he most cherished,” Mr Archer Jr stated, as he also extended condolences to Mr Malone’s wife, Mrs Icis A. Malone and son, Malcolm Malone, extended family, friends and loved ones.
