As part of Valley Heights Holding Limited, the new plaza, the brainchild of Mr Nervin O. Wheatley, boasts an array of shopping spaces, intended to serve everyone in the heart of Virgin Gorda.
“We broke ground on this project maybe two years ago,” the company’s Financial Consultant and Logistics Manager, Mr Dwane A. Mason, told Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) on Friday, August 1, 2025.
In Virgin Gorda for Virgin Gordians
Mr Wheatley’s vision was to build something in Virgin Gorda that would benefit Virgin Gordians and add to the sister island being a place of commerce.
“This is a dream of Nervin Wheatley come true, to bring something of this calibre to his native Virgin Gorda, and we’re hoping Virgin Gordians really embrace it for what it really is,” Mr Mason said.
An intentional move of the company is ensuring that a lot of the spaces in the plaza are occupied by Virgin Gordians.
“We don’t want businesses from Tortola coming over and occupying the spaces, so it’s a property in Virgin Gorda for Virgin Gordians, so that’s what we’re trying to do.”
With the structure finished and fully tenanted, some tenants have already moved in, operating from the plaza.
The company hopes to hold a grand opening and dedication sometime in September.
Mr Mason said a specific date has not been decided as yet, as they are awaiting more tenants to move in.
“Two tenants are already fully moved into their spaces and operating, and there are another three that are close to opening within the coming months, and the others are further off, but we’re hoping that by the end of September, most of the tenants should be ready to open their business and we would do the opening for the property.”
Something for everyone
“We tried to make the plaza a place where there’s something for just about everyone,” Mr Mason said.
The businesses already opened are HNF, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley’s District Office and EMCS Office. The new Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) ATM is also located at the plaza.
Opening soon are Caribbean Day Spa, Public Library, Triple Ds Bakery and Sips Cafe.
Other tenants who will open later are a dental and doctor’s medical practice with laboratory and pharmacy, a hair and beauty store, a travel agency, a 24-hour gym, and a photo studio/portrait museum.
The rooftop was also designed to feature a rooftop restaurant and bar, a gazebo for outdoor functions and a small play area for children.
The roof, Mr Mason added, has a view of the yacht harbour, Beef Island and the East End area.
He said the company intends to lease the rooftop restaurant to an interested restaurateur and open it by the end of the year.
“We have the design, we have the layout, and we’re just basically shopping it to interested persons, existing restaurateurs who would want to operate it from that location.”
Opened businesses are already thriving
Mr Mason also told us that one clothing store owner, operating from the plaza, is happy with the business she has received thus far.
It was an opportune time, he said, explaining that the tenant was able to open in time for the recent VI Poker Run and Christmas in July in Virgin Gorda events.
“Those items she sells flew off the racks, so she’s contented.”
Hon Wheatley’s office and the Saturday food pantry also draw people to the plaza.
“Most persons who come in they’re pleasantly surprised at how it looks because you drive in and you kind of forget that you’re on Virgin Gorda because of how it’s facing.”
Once inside the plaza, you are “sort of shut off from the outside road and neighbours” and are “within a community by itself”.
This, Mr Mason explained, was the idea: making people come to the plaza have an experience that makes them feel like they are elsewhere.
“The kind of ambience…most people are very receptive and find it inviting.”
Valley Heights Commercial Plaza now brings a second plaza shopping experience to Virgin Gorda.
“Virgin Gordians will now have ample commercial space, shopping on the island that could cover their needs fully,” Mr Mason said.
