USVI: Woman left unconscious & bleeding after partner allegedly punches her in face
CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI— A St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (USVI), man is facing domestic violence-related charges after police say he punched his partner in the face with enough force to leave her unconscious and bleeding outside her Patriot Manor residence.
According to court documents, police were called to the residence in the early morning hours of May 18. Responding officers found a woman lying unconscious and bleeding from the head. She was transported by ambulance to the hospital.
Officers spoke with the woman’s friend, who said she had been out with friends at a bar when she spotted D’Quan Rogers, also known as “Kimo.” According to the friend, the woman immediately asked to be taken home after seeing Rogers, her partner of approximately five years.
When they arrived at the residence, they found that Rogers had gotten there before them. The woman went inside, and the friend said Rogers exited the building shortly afterwards. The woman then came back outside with blood on her face before collapsing to the ground.
When police first spoke with the woman at the hospital, she told them that “Kimo” had assaulted her in the hallway.
After she was released, police interviewed her again and obtained more details. The woman said she had been out having dinner and drinks with male friends when Rogers approached the group, then left immediately afterwards. She assumed he was likely heading to her house, saying he reportedly goes there to take her jewelry and money when they have a disagreement.
The woman told police that because she had been out with male friends, she suspected Rogers would go to her residence. She asked one of her friends to take her home immediately.
Not the first incident of physical assault
According to the woman, Rogers had already arrived by the time she got there. She said she approached him and asked what he was doing at her residence. He reportedly responded by punching her in the face.
The woman said the force of the blow caused her to fall to the floor as blood flowed from a wound. She became dizzy and her vision blurred, but she managed to get up and make her way outside while holding onto the wall for support. When she reached her friend, she told him to call her mother and said she felt dizzy. She later woke up in the hospital surrounded by police officers.
Police said the woman suffered a laceration to the right side of her face that required eight stitches. Investigators also noted that this was not the first incident of physical violence between Rogers and his partner, though previous incidents had not been reported to law enforcement.
Rogers presented himself to the Domestic Violence & Special Victims Unit on Monday. He was arrested and charged with simple assault as a crime of domestic violence, aggravated assault, and disturbance of the peace.
During a court appearance on Tuesday, Magistrate Simone VanHolten-Turnbull found probable cause to uphold the charges against Mr Rogers. Bail was set at $1,000, with half payable in cash to secure his release before trial.
If released, Rogers must report to the probation office in person twice a week and comply with other standard bail conditions. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 12.
