USVI records 1st homicide for 2023

CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI— The [US] Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) on Sunday, January 15, 2023, announced the first homicide in the US Virgin Islands for 2023, following a shooting incident in Market Square, St Thomas.

According to VIPD Director of Communications Glen Dratte, on Sunday at about 12:45 am, the 911 Emergency Call Center received a report from a concerned resident that a man had been shot in the area of Market Square.

Responding police units made contact with an unresponsive male, who appeared to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds, the VIPD said. Emergency Medical Technicians were also on the scene and attempted to render life-saving measures.

The male victim was transported to Schneider Regional Medical Center via ambulance where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.

The male was identified as Marcos Antonio Benjamin Guerrero, a native of the Dominican Republic.
