FREDERIKSTED, St Croix, USVI— A man has been charged after he allegedly struck the mother of his children at a bar in St Croix, US Virgin Islands (USVI).

Zahkeed Bright was arrested following an incident on August 12, 2022, where the woman said she was at a bar speaking with a male friend when Bright approached her and said, “so this is who you talking to now?”

According to her statement, her friend then asked who Bright was referring to, at which point Bright became upset and threatened to slap him. The woman then told her friend to go take a walk to avoid an altercation and he left the bar. She said that while she walked away, Bright struck her in the back with an open palm and then pushed her friend. She also told police that Bright kicked her car repeatedly, but that there were no damages to the vehicle.

When police made contact with Bright over the phone, he stated that he was trying to have a conversation with the woman as to why she left their kids at home to go out. He stated that while speaking with her, an unknown man said, “who is this man talking to”. Bright claimed that he then walked away because he thought the interaction was disrespectful.

He told police that he tried to speak to the woman once more and he struck her because she did not want to speak with him. He denied pushing her friend or kicking her vehicle. However, a witness had told police that they saw Bright strike the woman and push her male friend.

Bright was later placed under arrest and charged with disturbance of the peace as well as simple assault and battery. At his bail hearing on Monday, he was informed that he would be released upon the posting of $101 in cash and the signing of an unsecured bond for the remainder of the bail which was set at $1,000.
