CHRISTIANSTED, St. Croix— Government House staff on St. Croix were evacuated on friday following a report of smoke conditions in the building. The Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Services (VI Fire/EMS) were dispatched to investigate the incident.

According to the Government House Executive Security Unit, it has been determined that there is no fire. All staff members have been reported safe and accounted for.

The offices will remain closed until the cause of the smoke condition is determined and the building is deemed safe for occupancy.

Lieutenant Governor Tregenza A. Roach announced the temporary closure of the Recorder of Deeds Division located at Government House in Christiansted due to the smoke conditions, which posed a safety hazard.

The premises have been vacated and are currently being assessed by the VI Fire/EMS Department.

The Recorder of Deeds Office is expected to reopen and resume normal operations on Monday, July 8, 2024.

The Office of the Lieutenant Governor apologized for any inconveniences caused by the temporary closure.

Looking at the picture I admire how the USVI have kept their historical buildings well maintained and functional even the Market Square on ST. Thomas which dates to the days of the sale of slaves. BVI has lost just about everything except the Old Governor's House it's such a pity. BVI totally mixed up and lost.

I totally agree. We are totally lost due to the removal of the country’s history.
