ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Virgin Islands athletics hero Kyron A. McMaster was given an official welcome home ceremony that included the presentation of a cheque for $38,000 on Thursday, September 15, 2022.

The ceremony was done at the Road Town Ferry Terminal and those present included Acting Governor David D. Archer Jr; Acting Premier Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5); Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL); Minster for Health and Social Development Hon Marlon A. The huge cheque, according to Hon de Castro, was for Kyron’s exploits at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Eugene, Oregon and the 2022 NACAC Championships in The Bahamas.

“He won the gold medal at both events so the cheque was symbolic of his winning and earnings for those meets,” Hon de Castro, who described McMaster as a “true champion and true Virgin Islands hero”, said.

McMaster, among other things, said: “I want to thank God for bringing me here safely. Lord knows the trials and tribulations.”

He shared that he had his fair share of struggles last year and this year, but he was grateful for the support received from his family, particularly his father Anthony S. McMaster who would call him up to three times a day for over six months.

While we can't put a price tag on him. If we learn how to value people and their contributions we would be a better territory. Give him what is due to him. He should not have to beg for nothing.

$38,000? $50,000 would have been more fitting. Or at least round it to $40,000. C’mon, A National Hero. We can do better than this.

    Give him a house...
Why dont we make it a free for all and give him a damn island while we're at it!
Did it ever occur to any of you that there are policies around what amounts are given for athletes achievements? '

Besides, what does it take to satisfy you people? NOTHING is ever enough! If he was given $100,000 some moron would still complain, either that it wasn't enough or that it was too much. Y'all make the dog sick!!

I want to believe that next time, we can present a cheque for a hundred grand(100,000) USD!!

Certainly, we must aspire to sufficiently reward our athletes!

How did they arrive at $38,000? Did they tally his receipts/expenses while competing and round it to the nearest thousand? Unusual amount…

We need more incentives like this. Let’s encourage this. There are a lot of talent within these shores that need the attention and support. We will be surprised how we can look on the world stage if we encourage and motivate the youth…..
