VI hosting first ever 3X3 ANOECS Basketball Tournament

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Teams from across the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) have gathered in the Virgin Islands (VI) to participate in the first-ever 3X3 Basketball Tournament, taking place from May 16 to 17, 2026, at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.

Teams from across the OECS

In an interview with our news centre, Mr Ephraim E. Penn, President of the BVI Olympic Committee (BVIOC) and the Association of National Olympic Committees of the OECS (ANOECS), noted that this tournament is historic for the Virgin Islands, as it is the first of its kind in the territory.

“It’s a 3X3 competition, and we have teams representing almost all of the OECS countries, including Grenada, Dominica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia, Antigua, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and the Virgin Islands,” he stated.

Mr Penn said that all teams have arrived, and a welcome session was held on Friday, May 15, 2026. “They are in good spirits and excited to take part in this historical tournament,” he added.

The games are scheduled to start today, Saturday, May 16, 2026, with the finals taking place the following day, May 17, 2026.

Tournament to benefit sports tourism & athletes

Penn encourages all nationals from the participating countries to come out and show their support for this significant event. He emphasised that this tournament will positively impact the local economy by promoting sports tourism. “It can open up new avenues for sports tourism in the British Virgin Islands. These tournaments are held all over the world, and with only four players on a team, it’s easy to organise,” he explained.

He also highlighted that this tournament can assist in the development of athletes throughout the OECS. “It exposes the athletes to a different style of basketball. The important reason we are doing this is that 3X3 basketball has been mandated by FIBA, the international governing body of basketball, to be featured in major events, from 3x3 games to the Olympics,” he added.

Mr Penn further pointed out that this tournament provides small countries with an opportunity to compete against larger nations and truly make a mark. “This isn’t just a competition; it’s also a chance for young men in our region to find another pathway to success and potentially change their lives for the better,” he said.
