The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services issued a weather advisory on Friday, August 28,  2026, warning that an area of disturbed weather associated with the decaying tropical system will move across the northern Caribbean. While the system is projected to affect the Leeward Islands beginning the evening of Saturday, August 29, 2026, the heaviest precipitation is scheduled to reach the British Virgin Islands by Sunday, August 30, 2026. 

Forecasters estimate rainfall accumulations between one and three inches across the territory, with locally higher totals possible during short, intense downpours. These concentrated bursts of rain significantly elevate the risk of sudden flash flooding.

Low-lying communities, areas with poor drainage systems, and properties near small creeks face the highest vulnerability to rising waters. The meteorological office highlighted that rapid inundation of roadways could create hazardous driving conditions throughout the affected period.

Residents urged to take precautionary measures 

Officials advise residents and motorists to take several precautionary measures ahead of the deteriorating conditions which include; monitoring local weather updates and official forecasts closely for any upgrades to warnings, Clearing debris, leaves, and trash from gutters, downspouts, and storm drains to facilitate runoff, and reviewing household flash flood safety plans and identifying routes to higher ground in the event a formal flash flood warning is activated and exercising extreme caution on roadways and avoid driving through submerged corridors.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services confirmed it will maintain continuous monitoring of the system and provide subsequent updates as atmospheric conditions evolve.

According to a tropical weather update issued Friday, August 28, 2026, by the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) via its official Facebook page, the system poses no immediate severe threat. However, residents should prepare for unsettled conditions late into the weekend.

Data sourced from the National Hurricane Centre’s 5:00 a.m. advisory places the centre of Tropical Storm Dolly near latitude 14.5° North, longitude 44.8° West, roughly 1,500 miles east of Road Town.

The system is travelling west at approximately 24 mph and carries maximum sustained winds near 40 mph.

Dolly projected to weaken in hostile environment

Forecasters expect Dolly to encounter increasingly hostile atmospheric conditions over the next few days. Stronger wind shear and unfavourable environmental factors are anticipated to weaken the system considerably as it nears the Lesser Antilles, potentially causing it to lose its tropical cyclone status before reaching the territory.

Despite the projected degradation, trailing moisture and remnant instability are likely to affect local weather patterns starting Sunday and lasting through Monday. 

Expected impacts & Advisory

Disaster management officials emphasised that heavy rainfall remains the primary concern rather than destructive tropical-storm-force winds.

Residents and mariners across the Virgin Islands should anticipate the following potential impacts, which are periods of showers accompanied by locally heavy downpours, Atmospheric instability with potential thunderstorm activity, Gusty winds occurring within heavier squalls, and locally rough sea and marine conditions.

Officials noted there is no cause for alarm but urged the public and marine interests to stay vigilant and monitor official weather bulletins as Dolly approaches the eastern Caribbean.
