VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – Seven men, who appeared to be citizens of the Dominica Republic (DR), were found on a barge that was docked in Virgin Gorda around 8 p.m. June 2, 2012, this news agency was reliably informed.

Information reaching this news site states that 4 of the DR nationals are in police custody with 3 still at large in the territory.

According to sources, the men who were hungry, emerged from the barge which was carrying concrete blocks and asked the Captain and crew for food.

Shocked, the Captain, a Grenadian national, immediately alerted the Police and the men were taken into custody, while the others fled the scene.

The barge originally left Grenada to pick up the cargo in DR, to drop it off on Virgin Gorda. A seasoned captain told this news site that the vessel would have taken two and a half days to travel from DR to Virgin Gorda.

Virgin Islands News Online will provide more details as it becomes available.

To For Real: How many people do you know in the BVI at the moment who haven't eaten in two and a half days? It amazes me that people say "things are hard all over" when they don't have a clue how HARD things can be for some people! We in the British Virgin Islands are extremely fortunate. Hunger is not something many of us here have to deal with on a regular basis. Yes we have our problems, but to be very honest, these days, we in the BVI don't know the first thing about really "HARD TIMES"! When you have no roof over your head, those are hard times! When you have no job and no food to eat, yeah, you could safely claim to be having hard times. When your children get sick and you have no money to take them to a doctor, THAT is really hard times! Please do not claim that it's "hard all over" unless and until you actually know FIRST HAND what it means to be going through hard times! I truly feel for these people. Hopefully, things will take a turn for the better for them.

Rattie said, "I know a big man with a job who has to go by his parents to eat so hush" And isn't he fortunate that he has parents who still feed him! Does his mother do his laundry for him too? The point is he has a job. He presumably has a roof over his head. Life is GOOD by comparison to many of our Caribbean brothers and sisters who are not nearly as fortunate! Show me just ONE starving Virgin Islander. Just one! I will quickly invite him or her to our house for as many meals as they need. We are not fancy eaters, but it is good, nutritious food ~ much of which we grow ourselves. Seriously, in what world is going home to have Mommy cook for you considered a hardship?
