UPDATE: Utility pole fixed!
Previously, at least two businesses had been affected after the car had collided with the utility pole around 4:45pm yesterday afternoon.
The collision, which occurred immediately in front of Crandall’s Bakery in Fishers Estate, left the car with extensive damages and the pole split in two. The pole appeared to have just missed hitting the building on its way down and came to rest in the branches of a tree.
The cable attached to the utility pole had stretched across the entrances of at least two businesses, namely Crandall’s and the Fort Burt hotel and restaurant.
Staff at Crandall’s Bakery said that the store was particularly inconvenienced when it came to the offloading of supplies. While this news site was on the scene, persons were seen offloading a truck of supplies immediately beneath the wires of the pole.
The staff member had said that the store had not been affected in any way through a power outage or any surges as a result of the downed pole at the time.
This news site also spoke with the manager of the Fort Burt Hotel who said she was off island at the time of the incident but had contacted the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVI EC) about the cable which was stretched across the entrance of the hotel. It was reported by another staff member that someone, who had not been aware of the downed power cable at the time, was forced to reverse all the way around the hotel to be able to pass out safely.
When contacted by this news site, Planning Officer in the Distribution Department of the BVI EC, Kensley Arthur had said “We are aware [of the problem] and have already started trying to get that repaired.”
He noted that there was no estimated time for the pole to be fixed, however, technicians have assessed the damage and were in the process of determining what measures needed to be taken to have the issue resolved.
“They looked at it and determined what need[ed] to be done… ,” he stated.
