UPDATE: Tropical storm conditions & heavy rain possible from Friday- DDM

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Virgin Islands will start to experience Tropical Storm conditions from Tammy possibly by tomorrow, Friday, October 20, 2023, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) informed today, October 19, 2023.

It said at 5:00 AM, Tammy was located 13.5N and 54.8W about 638 miles ESE from Road Town, moving towards the west at 17mph. On the forecast track, the centre of Tammy will move near or over the Leeward Islands Friday and Saturday.

DDM said there are presently no watches or warnings in effect for the [British] Virgin Islands.

Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches with maximum amounts of 4 inches are expected for the Virgin Islands.

DDM advised residents to monitor this system closely and work to complete any seasonal preparations in case this system develops into a threat to the Virgin Islands.

Tropical Storm Tammy forms in Caribbean Sea

Tropical Storm Tammy formed Wednesday afternoon, October 18, 2023, near the Caribbean Sea, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Tropical storm watches have been issued for portions of the Lesser Antilles.

Tammy is about 625 miles east of the Windward Islands, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, according to the hurricane center. It is quickly moving west at 23 mph but its forward motion is expected to slow down by Thursday.

“A turn toward the west-northwest is forecast by Thursday night, followed by a turn toward the northwest Friday night or Saturday,” the National Hurricane Center said. “On the forecast track, the center of Tammy will move near or over the Leeward Islands Friday and Saturday.”

Its maximum sustained winds are expected to increase up to 70 mph in about four days.

Tropical storm watches have so far been issued for Barbados, Dominica, Martinique and Guadeloupe.

    They saying that the center passing over us and from the pictures shown, it coming directly at us BUT YET, no tropical storm watch/warning is in effect for us??????????????? They does wait last minute to put us under tropical watch!!

    No one said the center passing over us it said the center passing over the leeward Islands and 638 miles away from the Road Town so where did you see that it’s coming directly into us. The picture is showing that the storm will be on the edge of us if it doesn’t shift so maybe that’s why there’s no warning yet

    Of those storms, it is estimated that two to five could become major hurricanes reaching at least Category 3 strength with winds of 111mph or greater.
